The X ISF Jr. World Championship of Softball comes to a close today at Whitehorse, Yukon. Three teams remain in contention for the gold medal, and all three will medal. New Zealand earned a spot in the gold medal game with a 3-1 win over Argentina, who suffered their first loss of the tournament.
Japan topped Australia and will face Argentina in the bronze medal game, and a spot in the final.
A look at the medal history of the remaining:
New Zealand has won four medals, two gold and two silver, but not since 1997, 17 years ago.
2 Gold (1985 and 1989)
2 Silver (1993 and 1997)
Argentina has won 1 medal, a gold in 2012, at Parana, Argentina, and are the reigning world champions.
Japan has won 7 medals (tied for the lead currently with Canada going into today’s games):
1 Gold (1981)
3 Silver, (’01, ’05 and 2012)
3 Bronze, (’89, ’93 and ’08)
a 4th
and a 5th.
