Triple plays in softball usually require a ball hit hard and directly at a fielder, some perfect defensive play and perhaps a slow runner or two. Naturally, they are difficult to complete.
In 2009, Team Japan played an exhibition match against Team Canada in Prince Albert in advance of the two teams competing at the Men’s Fastball World Championships in Saskatoon. On June 23, P.A. will once again host an international exhibition doubleheader in advance of a tournament in Saskatoon.
A group of softball organizers in Prince Albert thinks it has a better chance of turning its own version of the triple play. To do so, all it needs is a couple million dollars.
The Aallcann Development Fastball Organization (ADFO) and Prince Albert Minor Softball Association (PAMSA) launched Project Triple Play on Tuesday, an initiative that they expect will bring three major softball events to the city over the next three years.
The first prong of the initiative will see P.A. host the under-16 boys Canadian championships from Aug. 5-9. After that hosting gig, the organizers hope to get shovels in the ground for new development and alterations to an existing diamond at the park.
“If that expensive work can get done, the Project Triple Play group hopes that the International Softball Federation (ISF) will award the 2018 Junior Men’s World Championships to P.A.”
