Six players from Newfoundland have been named to Canada’s 17-player roster for the 2017 WBSC world men’s softball championship to be held in the Yukon.
Sean Cleary (Harbour Main), Brad Ezekiel (Harbour Main), Stephen Mullaley (Freshwater), Colin Walsh (Petty Harbour) and brothers Ryan Boland and Shane Boland (Goulds) were named to the final roster after a selection camp held in Kitchener and Innerkip, Ont., over the weekend.
Shane Boland and Walsh are newcomers to the team. The others had already been named as part of Team’ Canada’s national senior core roster and members of the team that won the 2016 world championship and a gold medal most recent Pan American Games.
It might have been seven Newfoundlanders seeking to defend the world title, but Jason Hill of St. John’s, who was already named to the core group, will be unable to attend the championship in Whitehorse, July 7-16 because of personal reasons.
