From Paul Rubin:
As some of you know and most of you don’t, our longtime friend and teammate Dan Winters passed away a few hours ago after a long and difficult fight against a terrible blood cancer.
He died at home in Burbank surrounded by his family, with whom he was especially close. Danny’s wife (and also my good friend) Marianne told me that he got to hold his baby grandchild in his arms on Sunday and was alert enough to enjoy the moment with a big smile. That was a blessing….
Dan was a close friend. We met at the 1993 Maccabiah Games in Israel, which was only a few years after his professional baseball career ended with a stint at the Triple-A level (he was traded with another guy in his early 20s in return for the great Dusty Baker–who then was about 40).
We had a great time on this that 1993 trip, and became friends for the duration. Dan was a really fine teammate and a good guy.
Danny loved his wife and three kids dearly. Marianne tells me that the family is planning a “rager”–a hell of a party–at their house in Burbank. Tentatively is scheduled for Saturday, December 1. Anyway, you all have a great day and hang tough….
