Super round Day 1 of the WBSC U-19 Women’s Softball World Cup is in the books.
Chinese Taipei beat Mexico, 2-1, making the most of a first-inning, two-RBI triple by catcher Lin Chia Hsuan. Feng Yu Hsuan pitched five innings in relief and earned the win.
Mexico stranded two runners in the first and didn’t have another real scoring chance until the top of the seventh. The game ended with the potential tying run at first.
A seven-run first inning set the tone for Japan, that went on to defeat Puerto Rico, 10-0 in four innings.
Japan’s offence combined 10 hits and an aggressive attitude forced four defensive errors. Pitchers Miu Goto and Chise Yamashita limited Puerto Rico to one hit.
Japan earned the second win later on the day as they shut out, 9-0 in five innings, Chinese Taipei.
Starter Mio Sakamoto cruised through Chinese Taipei line up allowing only two hits over four innings. Japan’s leadoff reached in each of the four at-bats. Catcher Haruki Sumitani had a three-hit game, including a two-run home run.
Canada played solid defence behind the almost untouchable starter Madelyn Hickingbottom and used some timely hitting to defeat Mexico, 4-0.
Mexico’s starter Yanina Trevino was bothered by control issues and defence couldn’t support her when she tried to get out of jams.
Australia scored three in the top of the seventh on base hits by Georgia Hood and Philippa Adkins to reverse the lead and beat China, 4-2.
Hood also pitched four innings in relief, allowing only one run and earning the win.
The USA didn’t fail to impress once again. Behind a once again unhittable Megan Faraimo, who has struck out 20 of 21 batters faced in two games, the defending World Champions outscored Canada, 12-0 in four innings.
Jadelyn Allchin Curran opened the score in the top of the second with a two-run home run.
