(08/21/2010)Saturday August 21, 2010
6:47
Good evening to everyone around the world for tonight’s International Softball Congress World Tournament title game between the Kitchener (Ont.) Rivershark Twins and the Jarvis (Ont.) Travelers
6:48
My name is Geoff Mott and I’ll provide the plays for you as the Rivershark Twins will try to become for the first ISC team to win three straight titles in 50 years.
6:49
I welcome all questions (provided that you know I’m a novice when it comes to the ISC) and will let everyone discuss the game and any other fastpitch softball chatter
6:49
as long as it’s clean, of course

game on
6:50
Skies are darkening to the North and we’re hoping they avoid Midland’s Currie Stadium. The lights are on and both teams are warming up. We await starting lineups
6:52
Jarvis, which had to win a pair of extra inning games today, will be your visitors… It’s a winner-take-all championship game, regardless if Kitchener has won all tournament long
6:53
For Jarvis: 1. Freddy Terkelsen, CF; 2. Ben Enoka, RF; 3. Nick Shailes, LF; 4. Brad Rona, 3B; 5. Ian Fehrman, SS; 6. Brandon Horn, 2B; 7. Rob O’Brien, DH; 8. TIm Macumber, 1B; 9. Sean O’Brien, C and Trevor Ethier is on the mound as an exhausted Adam Folkard is on the bench

[Comment From Guest]
looks like jarvis should of used eithier in earlier games
6:59
The anthems have been played, a few raindrops have fallen and we’re ready for some ball here at Currie Stadium
7:03
Terkelsen grabs a bat and here we go …
7:03
First pitch is a fast ball down the pipe for strike one
7:03
Crowd doesn’t seem scared of the weather, they just keep filing in
7:04
Terke
7:05
Terkelsen fouled ball of his foot, home plate ump ruled it fair, but was overruled by 3B ump… they got it right it’s a full count now
7:05
[Comment From rickey]
whoare the three umpires
7:07
I know Saginaw’s Rick Havercroft is the 3B ump … let me check on the other two are … Wiremu “Wu” Tamaki from New Zealand is behind the dish, let me check on the 1B ump
7:07
Terkelsen grounds out to second
7:07
[Comment From RVogel]
Is that Rick Havercroft?
7:09
Enoka grounds out to third, Shailes at the plate
7:10
Shailes pops up to the catcher and Shannon makes a nice play at the backstop
7:10
Randy McLamb is th
7:10
the ump at second, Steve Jahnke is the first base ump
7:11
[Comment From DAVID PUTNAM]
HOW DOES FOLKARD LOOK AFTER A LONG DAY IN THE SADDLE?
7:12
Folkard was cruising in the first game before NYC/CHI Dominica’s Todd Schultz hit a three run homer in the seventh to force extra innings. That was big. Jarvis won 6-4, but then the next game went 10 innings
7:14
Wolfe drew a walk to lead off inning, Brad Ezekiel successfully bunts him over to second
7:14
Goolagong at the plate
7:14
Ethier off the mark a little early
7:16
after falling behind 3-0, Ethier rallies back to strikeout Goolagong
7:17
I wonder when Jarvis coach Fred McKeen will look to his tired, big right Folkard …
7:18
Pat Shannon at the plate, takes a strike on the corner, 1-2 pitching coming
7:18
Eithier blows him away with a fastball…. he settled in well there
7:19
Ethier is a native of Saskatoon, Alberta, Don Scott hails from Sebringville, Ontario
7:20
[Comment From DAVID PUTNAM]
HOW BIG IS THE CROWD
7:20
Good size crowd here … i’d say 2,000, maybe more. Even better than when the Explorers were playing this week
7:21
Rona up to lead off .. he’s played well at third this week
7:21
Scott falls behind him 3-1, then Rona takes a big rip and fouls it off
7:22
Rona walks and now lefty Ian Fehrman grabs a bat
7:22
Fehrman slammed a ball in the seventh against NYC-CHI for a three run home. Dominica came back to tie in what was a wild losers bracket game
7:23
Fehrman whiffs … Brandon Horn to bat with Rona on first
7:23
[Comment From Paul]
Is there something wrong with Todd Martin
7:23
Horn flies out to left, two away
7:24
Not sure on Martin … Scott has pitched well for Kitchener this week
7:25
Rona caught stealing to end the inning. Shannon ended the top of the first with a nice play and now provides a throw that is right on the money…. 0-0 heading into bottom of the second
7:25
[Comment From Paul]
Just asking as Martin is considered the ace for Kitchener and he has not pitched that much during the tournament
7:26
Thanks for the info Paul … I’ll check in the box here, see if anyone knows anything
7:26
Jody Eidt to lead off for Kitchener
7:26
Eidt takes a couple solid swings, but pulls the ball foul … 0-2
7:28
Eidt stood there like a house by the side of the road and watched that go by for strike three… Eidt was not impressed with the called third strike
7:28
That last phrase was in honor of the late Detroit Tigers announcer Ernie Harwell
7:28
Blair Ezekiel pops out to second base … two away
7:29
Rob Gray at the bat for Kitchener
7:30
Etheir strikes him out and has four Ks through two innings
7:31
Gray took a huge swing at that last pitch
7:31
What’s everyone’s opinion on the ISC going to a winner-take-all championship game instead of the standard “if” game that would follow in most tourneys?
7:32
DH Rob O’Brien blasts a shot to the RF-CF gap and leads off the inning with a double… only his second hit of the tourney
7:32
[Comment From Knuck]
What’s that 3rd Base Camera Man doing?
7:32
[Comment From guest]
i like it
7:33
[Comment From Essy]
Jarvis has to be tired…2 xtra inning games and now the big one!
7:33
Tim Macumber at the dish for Jarvis and has a 2-1 count…. O’Brien is active at second
7:34
Jarvis took a tiny break between its games earlier and has to be happy that it’s not too hot out there
7:34
[Comment From DAVID PUTNAM]
BIG ADVANTAGE TO THE UNDEFEATED TEAM AND I LIKE IT
7:34
[Comment From Paul]
It should be a true double knockout – once you lose 2 games you are eliminated
7:35
Macumber grounds out to SS, O’Brien stays put at second…. Sean O’Brien at the plate
7:35
one out
7:35
[Comment From Jamie]
No need the if game. I remember Cdn championships were won because they saved Holein for the 2nd game after Cox was tired out from throwing 2.
7:36
[Comment From Guest]
has Phibbs, staats, Cournyea seen much action this week for jarvis?
7:37
David, it’s not too big of an advantage for the undefeated team. Jarvis gets a second chance after losing in this tournament, Kitchener could roll all the way to the title and lose in the last game
7:37
… and come away with nothing
7:39
Sean O’Brien drives in Rob O’Brien with a big single to left field… .the throw to the plate hit R. O’Brien in the back, allowing him to score for a 1-0 Jarvis lead. S O’Brien takes second
7:39
[Comment From rozi]
go boys go
7:39
top of the order again, one out, man on second
7:39
[Comment From DAVID PUTNAM]
TO ME THAT IS WHAT MAKES IT EXCITING. BOTH GOTTA GO FOR IT
7:40
I do like that that element David …. puts a lot of emphasis on one game
7:40
Terkelsen slaps a ball between first and second, S. O’Brien scores without a play at the plate. Jarvis takes 2-0 lead on the defending champs
7:41
Ekona bounces into a 4-6-3 double play and it was a pretty easy twin killling
7:41
Jarvis hit the ball around there. They lead 2-0 heading into bottom of the third
7:42
[Comment From Guest]
Come on Opie….win one for the Travelers
7:42
Darrell Joy leads off for Kitchener
7:43
Kitchener looks to get runs back, Joy knocks a single back up the middle… Blake Miller grabs a bat
7:44
[Comment From guest]
is the pen going for kitch…?
7:45
Somebody is in the Kitchener bullpen, not sure who … however, Andrew Phibbs is throwing in the pen for Jarvis
7:45
Miller bloop single pops out of a diving catch attempt by Jarvis center fielder Terkelsen … runners on first and second and no outs
7:46
Wolfe, who drew a walk in the first, is up and has a 2-0 count
7:46
[Comment From Guest]
Did you happen to get any info on Martin, he only pitched 5 and a third innings the whole week and he’s always been their top dog, i gotta think if he was healthy he’d be getting the ball over Don Scott or GP.
7:46
[Comment From Guest]
Is Folkard icing his arm or staying loose?
7:46
[Comment From DAVID PUTNAM]
DID YOU GET ANY WORD ON TODD MARTIN
7:47
Word is Martin is injured
7:47
base his for Wolfe, Joy scores … meeting at the mound … 2-1 Jarvis
7:48
Brad Ezekiel at the plate
7:48
I think we’re seeing why Kitchener is so good… it falls behind 2-0 and goes right back to work … Ezekiel sac bunt moves runners to second and third … Goolagong to the plate, one out
7:49
[Comment From Wags]
word is martin has injured his pectoral muscle
7:49
[Comment From Guest]
That would be 2 years in a row where Martin is injured during the ISC’s
7:49
thanks and thanks
7:49
I don’t see Folkard … he’s buried in the dugout somewhere
7:50
[Comment From DAVID PUTNAM]
THIS IS A REAL HEAVYWEIGHT FIGHT ISNT IT
7:50
maybe his shoulder is encased in ice right about now
7:50
3-1 pitch is outside … bases loaded for the cleanup hitter, catcher Patrick Shaw
7:51
Kelly McGriffin grabs the ball from Ethier … we’re going to see Andrew Phibbs in a pressure situation
7:51
Ethier allows one runs on three hits, so far…. all three runners are credited to Saskatoon native
7:52
[Comment From Guest]
Whats in it for the winners other than bragging rights? Is there a payout?
7:52
No payout … just a beautiful trophy and bragging rights, especially bragging right in the province of Ontario
7:52
[Comment From Jamie]
Good to see a hometown boy throwing in the final game!
7:53
Phibbs is from Hagersville, Ontario
7:53
[Comment From Guest]
who won the under 19
7:54
Scarborough defeated Oshawa, 6-0 in 19-under final
7:54
[Comment From Guest]
Hagersville 7 jarvis are 5 minutes apart!
7:54
[Comment From Jamie]
Hagersville is 7 km from Jarvis
7:54
[Comment From DAVID PUTNAM]
HE HAS BEEN CANADIAN CHAMPION IN JUNIORS.
7:54
You learn something every day
7:54
2-1 count to Shannon
7:55
ball nearly hit Shannon, which would have tied the game … high pressure for Phibbs here
7:55
drops a strike in as Shannon turns away … full count
7:55
[Comment From Guest]
Scott is also a hometown boy for Kitchener
7:56
two away for Jody Eidt
7:56
Shannon just watched strike three and he just looks to sky in disbelief
7:56
Eidt struck out the first time up
7:57
Jarvis shortstop Ian Fehrman hauls in the pop to preserve the 2-1 lead. … we head to the fourth inning
7:57
[Comment From Jamie]
I thought Don was from Sebringville
7:57
[Comment From huggie]
shannon lives for this situation
7:57
[Comment From Guest]
when zack was in his heyday did Jack Fireman actually pay him $20,000 a year to pitch
7:57
[Comment From DAVID PUTNAM]
THAT WAS A MONSTER OUT
7:57
[Comment From Guest]
Is Zack still hanging around….too late to add to a roster?/ 🙂
7:58
[Comment From Jamie]
Eidt is big in big situations……..this is it
7:58
Shailes leads off for Jarvis
7:58
Not sure of payments to Zack … he looked good at age 50 today, helping Cobourg Force win the first ever ISC Legends title
7:59
[Comment From Jamie]
Phibbs – maybe the biggest out of his career right there.
7:59
[Comment From Guest]
winner take all or does jarvis have to win twice
7:59
winner takes all
8:00
Shailes lines out to left … Rona at the plate now
8:00
Grant Patterson is throwing in the bullpen for Kitchener
8:01
great concentration from Kitchener third baseman Blair Ezekiel, who kicked Rona’s hard grounder and fired to first in time
8:01
[Comment From Guest]
Zack beat PA Power in their first game of the Tournament, before Power went on a great run in the losers bracket
8:02
2-2 now to Fehrman with two out
8:02
he struck out taking a huge cut at that Don Scott riser
8:03
2-1 Jarvis as we head to the bottom of the fourth
8:04
[Comment From DAVID PUTNAM]
AND THE PRESSURE CONTINUES TO MOUNT. WHAT A GAME
8:05
Blair Ezekiel to bat for the Rivershark Twins, who are probably looking to forget last inning, which only netted one run and left three on
8:05
Blair Ezekiel rips a single into left field
8:05
[Comment From Jamie]
Jody Eidt with the bases juiced is pressure.
8:05
[Comment From guest]
are they going with the same format next year? combining I & II
8:06
i would think so … the format worked really well this year…. it’s been a real smooth tournament …. sac bunt successful for Rob Gray, bringing Darrell Joy to the plate with the tying run on second
8:06
[Comment From DAVID PUTNAM]
THAT EZEKIEL IS A MONEY PLAYER
8:07
I got to meet Blair Ezekiel when he was 18-years old and playing in the area for Frankenmuth Michigan
8:07
I was a young writer back then, too
8:07
1-1 pitch to Joy is strike on the outside corner
8:08
He also played with CHi/NYC’s Steve Mullaley and Jason Hill … they won the 19-under and 23-under World titles .
8:08
Joy strikes out, bringing Blake Miller to plate with two away and an eager Blair Ezekiel at second
8:09
Miller drills a ball right at Enoka in right field. Enoka was positioned perfectly. We head to the first inning, Jarvis up 2-1
8:09
[Comment From guest]
when can we expect the picking/posting of the all world team?
8:10
That will be announced after the game…. hopefully i can list that here too…. I am on deadline for tomorrow’s newspaper
8:11
Brandon Horn grounds out to Goolagong at SS, one away for Rob O’Brien
8:11
[Comment From Guest]

[Comment From DAVID PUTNAM]
WOW JARVIS DODGED ANOTHER BULLET
8:11
top of the fifth
8:12
O’Brien’s check swing fly ball to left field is easily hauled in by Brad Ezekiel … two away for Macumber
8:12
[Comment From Guest]
Whos been the most impressive rookie at the tournament this year?
8:12
Macumber slaps a base hit past second base …. Sean O’Brien grabs a stick
8:13
I’ll tell ya, my head is spinning from all of these games and I’m not sure who the top rookie would be …. I watched some 19-under and I know the kids in Ontario sure know how to play ball
8:13
[Comment From Guest]
Whats the weather look like ? Gonna get the game in ?
8:13
[Comment From Jamie]

8:17
Still no sight of Folkard …. but Phibbs has looked good out there
8:17
Wolfe leads off for Kitchener, looks at ball one
8:17

8:18
Enoka tracks down a hard liner from Wolfe … one away for Brad Ezekiel

8:25
Enoka flies out to Brad Ezekiel … two away
8:25
Shailes is up now
8:26

Phibbs will want to finish this one off, especially with the insurance runs
8:30
Eidt has not looked comfortable at the plate tonight… he leads off the inning and is down 1-2 in the count
8:31
Great defense now for Jarvis. Horn scoops hard grounder and gets Eidt… one away
8:31
Blair Ezekiel to bat with one out
8:32
Ezekiel has singled and was left on second
8:32
Make that two singles for Blair E. …. Rob Gray up for Kitchener

Double play …. Jarvis is feasting on momentum …. Fehrman snagged the hard grounder near second base, tagged the base and fired a strike to Macumber
8:34
ISC has shown great parity over the years… Nobody has won three titles in a row since 1960
8:35
Kitchener has three outs to make a come back and make that bid for a third straight title
8:35
[Comment From guest]

[Comment From guest]
I hope Midland hosts again soon
8:50
[Comment From Wayne Saunders]
Congrats Jarvis and the Blue crew. Enjoyed the chat from downunder
8:51
Both teams had six hits in this one… Obviously the back-to-back homers from Shailes and Rona in the sixth inning is the straw that broke Kitchener’s back
8:51
Jarvis wins three games today, fights off fatigue and are crowned World Champions.
8:52
