WATERLOO \u2014 Brandon Horn is all heart.<\/p>\n

It’s one of the main reasons the Waterloo second baseman was identified as one of the seven core players for Canada’s national softball team ahead of the Pan Am Games in Toronto.<\/p>\n

“He’ll do anything to make a play,” said head coach John Stuart, who isn’t naming the rest of his 15-member roster until mid-June.<\/p>\n

“He is a true professional and he’ll do whatever it takes to learn the game better to improve his hitting and fielding.”<\/p>\n

Stuart likens the 29-year-old plumber to Dustin Pedroia, the scrappy second baseman for the Boston Red Sox and one-time American League most valuable player.<\/p>\n

Like the major-leaguer, Horn too relies on his speed and bats high in the order to set the table for Canada’s heavy hitters in the power slots.<\/p>\n

“He’s a heart and soul guy,” said Stuart. “He just goes out there and performs every night.” <\/span><\/p>\n

Men’s softball is returning to the Games for the first time since being dropped in 2003. Until then, Canada dominated the diamond by winning every gold medal \u2014 seven straight \u2014 over a 24-year span.
