SUMMERSIDE \u00e2\u20ac\u201d The first tournament Paul Gallant ever organized was the national junior men\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fastpitch softball championship in 1983.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Twenty-four years later and here we are again,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Gallant, the tournament director.<\/p>\n

Sunday at 11 a.m., the Causeway Bay national junior men\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fastpitch championship begins in Summerside.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It lasts eight days,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Gallant. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re hoping to get about 20,000 people going through the park during the tournament.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

There are nine teams entered in the tournament, including the host Summerside Source For Sports Twins.<\/p>\n

There are no enteries from Manitoba, Alberta or British Columbia, but there is one each from Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Saskatchewan. There are three teams representing Ontario.<\/p>\n

Gallant said families travelling with ball players tend to make a vacation out of these tournaments.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153There will be a visitor information booth set up at the ball field for people who want to know things like where to go sailing.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Summerside was awarded the tournament late in 2005, beating out two other communities.<\/p>\n

Since then, Gallant has been getting ready for the event.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I could be on the phone with you for hours describing the minor details that go on behind the scenes in order to organize a ball tournament.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Organizing volunteers, making sure the ball field meets softball Canada standards, getting sponsors, setting up travel times and putting together opening and closing ceremonies are only some of the things he needs to do to prepare for the tournament.<\/p>\n

Gallant is also talking with the teams every day to make sure they are informed about things like transportation schedules.<\/p>\n

So far, everything is going smoothly, but Gallant said there are always minor issues they have to deal with when the tournament starts.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t drink . . . but I usually have a beer at the end of each tournament to celebrate that it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s over,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said with a laugh.<\/p>\n
