SUMMERSIDE – The Scarborough Wolverines scored three times inthe top of the sixth inning and held off a hard charging Kelly\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Pub Canadians to capture the 2007 Causeway Bay Softball Canada
\nJunior men\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fast pitch championship here Sunday.
\nThe Wolverines scored three after the Canadians scored two in
\nthe bottom of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.
\nNL missed an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the
\nsixth when Ken Gosse hit a fly ball, that was caught with one
\nout. Matt Hill on third stayed put and didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t tag up.
\nAndrew Putham (2-3, run scored), Rob Bennett (1-3, run scored,
\nRBI), and Rob Clayton (2-3, runs cored) powered the offense.
\nBrad Ezekiel (2-3, run scored) Ryan Boland (1-2, runs cored)
\nand pinch hitter Shane O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Brien (1-1, rbi double) led NL.
\n“I faced these guys last year and they had my number,” Putham
\nsaid. “For this game, I just wanted to get ahead of them.”
\nTop player for the championship rond, Brandon Horn, 1-for-3 in
\nthe contest, was happy with the game.
\n“I just wanted to get on base and allow my teammates to cash
\nme in,”I just tried to get the bat on the ball.
\nScarborough coach Ryan Freedman was very excited with the result,
\nhaving lost twice earlier to the NL team.
\n“It was the closest final I have ever been in,” he said.
\nSean Cleary suffered the loss, going the distance striking out
\n11.
\nIn the semifinal Sunday morning, Matt Leahy threw six innings
\nof one hit ball, fanning eight and walking one batter and Cam
\nHaulk drove in two runs as the Scarborough Wolverines advanced
\nto the championship game with a 4-0 win over Elmira Advance Millwright.
\nThe Wolverines win sets up a third meeting between Scarborough
\nand Kelly\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Pub Canadians of Newfoundland and Labrador, last
\nyear\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s champions. The other two meetings were wins, 7-3 and 6-3
\nby the NL squad. Saturday they beat Scarborough 6-3 in extra
\ninnings to advance straight to the final.
\nBrandon Horn (1-3, run scored, RBI), Nick Dambrosio (2-3, RBI)
\nand Rob Bennett (1-3, run scored) led the attack.
\nBen Tee (1-2) had Elmira\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s lone hit
\nAndrew Putnam pitched an inning of no hit ball, striking out
\ntwo in relief. Dan Martin went six innings allowing four runs
\non eight hits walking one and fanning three.
\nElmira finishes third place, bronze medal, good considering they
