Twins erased a 2-0 deficit in the championship match to rally and tie the game after 7 regulation innings. In extra play, the Twins used depth in their roster to score a run in the B9 to win 3-2 and snatch the gold medal from a very resilient, hardworking, but tired Jarvis First Ontario Gamblers squad.

It was the 2nd successive “silver lining” medal for the Gamblers, who almost won the required “three-in-a-row” on Championship Sunday in St. Thomas, casting aside St. John’s NL Kelly’s Pub 1-0 and host St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials 5-1. Twins P Todd Martin threw his only 2.7 innings of the week, in relief of hard-working Don Scott to record the win, while Gamblers P Andrew Phibbs, in relief of Paul Koert was tagged with the loss. THOMAS

The St. Thomas Centennial Sports Club and the 2009 Canadian Senior Men’s Fastball Championship Host Committee proved the experience counts. The week long championship was well organized, with excellent facilities, perfect weather for all but the opening day (bit of rain) and solid support from the local business community and fans. With the host team copping the Bronze Medal (back to back after claiming the same last year in Saskatoon, and following up on its two gold medals from 2005 and 2006) local interest was piqued.

The 270+ volunteers, many of them repeaters from hostings in 1999 and 2005, fulfilled their responsibilities with an abundance of smiles each and every day. The refreshment tent and food court were generous in size, meticulously clean and the “healthy menu options” were appreciated by those who were at the park for eight days straight.

Note to Softball Canada – awarding the event once again to St. Thomas should be a “slam-dunk” decision.
