{"id":3778,"date":"2009-11-25T19:04:09","date_gmt":"2009-11-26T02:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fastpitchwest.com\/morningbrief\/?p=3778"},"modified":"2009-11-25T19:06:52","modified_gmt":"2009-11-26T02:06:52","slug":"local-umpire-reaches-top-level-at-young-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fastpitchwest.com\/morningbrief\/?p=3778","title":{"rendered":"Local umpire reaches top level at young age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trurodaily.com\/index.cfm?sid=305852&#038;sc=70\"><strong>From the Truro News, Nova Scotia<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<em>(click link for original news story)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>MATT VENO<br \/>\nThe Truro Daily News<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>TRURO \u00e2\u20ac\u201c There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a big difference between Clinton Harvey and other Level 5 umpires in<br \/>\nCanada.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s about half the age of his counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>The 28-year-old Tatamagouche resident achieved the mark, the highest an umpire can get in Canada, recently after receiving a successful assessment following the Canadian Senior Men\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Softball Championship in St. Thomas, Ont.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I always looked up to the Level 5 guys and thought it would be neat to get there,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Harvey said.<br \/>\nHarvey said he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s heard of other umpires in their 20s achieving Level 5 status, but most who do are in their 40s or 50s. Most who do are former players who typically end their playing days in their mid-30s. It then takes another 10 to 15 years to go from a beginner umpire to Level 5.<br \/>\nIt took Harvey 13 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I really love the game,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153But it got to a point where I wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t good enough to play at the higher levels so this was a way for me to get involved in the high levels of the sport.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nThe certification allows him to move on to international umpiring status. He can do so through an international school put on by Softball Canada which includes on-field and classroom components.<\/p>\n<p>The certification also permits him to be umpire in chief at any Canadian championship tournament where he will evaluate fellow umpires and assign them to games.<br \/>\nWhile he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s looking forward to doing so, the coming season will probably be too busy for Harvey to jump right in. <\/p>\n<p>He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be finishing a masters program through the summer and is a member of the organizing committee for the junior men\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Canadian championship in St. Croix in August.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153So I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be pretty busy when all the Canadian championships are happening,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Harvey said.<\/p>\n<p>sports@trurodaily.com<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Truro News, Nova Scotia (click link for original news story) MATT VENO The Truro Daily News TRURO \u00e2\u20ac\u201c There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a big difference between Clinton Harvey and other Level 5 umpires in Canada.
