(Ottawa, ON) Softball Canada is very pleased to announce that Don Bates (Saskatoon, SK) has been chosen as the Head Coach of the Men\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s National Team program. Don was an assistant coach with the Men\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s program since 2006, and also served as an assistant coach with the Senior Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Olympic Team in 2008. Bates will replace Mark Smith (Falmouth, NS), who stepped down earlier this year to take on the Head Coach position of the Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s National Team program.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I am honored to assume the position of Head Coach of the Canadian Men’s National Softball Team\u00e2\u20ac\u009d stated Don Bates. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The program has a rich tradition of being one of the best in the world. I look forward to working with Canada’s top male softball athletes as we begin our initial preparation for the 2013 ISF World Championship in New Zealand.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

A Level III coach working towards obtaining his Level IV certification, Don has also helped Softball Canada on the administrative side of the game. He has been a member of the Long Term Athlete Development Steering Committee, and just recently accepted to chair the committee at the 2009 Annual General Meeting held in Ottawa. A retired school principal who now runs Saskatchewan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s first High School Softball Academy, Don will devote most of his time to promote and teach the sport of softball.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It will be a real pleasure to have Don Bates on board as the Head Coach of our Senior Men’s National Team program\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Softball Canada President Kevin Quinn. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Don is highly respected in the softball community for both his softball expertise and his ability to work cooperatively. Don has great technical knowledge, especially in the pitching area, and will be a real asset in developing young athletes as we start our rebuilding process. I am extremely pleased that Don has accepted the challenge and look forward to working with him in the future.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

The Senior Men\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s National Team recently won a Bronze medal at the 2009 ISF Men\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s World Championship held in Saskatoon, and is always considered a Gold medal threat.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153With a number of our current National Team players retiring from competitive play, one priority over the next two years will be to identify our top young players who appear ready to make the transition to International competition\u00e2\u20ac\u009d assessed Bates. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153These players will need to be exposed to top International competition to gain the experience required for success at the ISF World Championship. I look forward to working closely with the Provincial\/Territorial associations as we begin the process of identifying and developing our National Team roster players.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Don \u00c3\u00a9tait un entra\u00c3\u00aeneur adjoint avec le programme masculin depuis 2006, et a aussi servi comme entra\u00c3\u00aeneur adjoint de l\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c3\u2030quipe Nationale F\u00c3\u00a9minin Olympique en 2008. Il a \u00c3\u00a9t\u00c3\u00a9 membre du Comit\u00c3\u00a9 de direction du programme de D\u00c3\u00a9veloppement \u00c3\u00a0 long terme de l\u00e2\u20ac\u2122athl\u00c3\u00a8te, et a r\u00c3\u00a9cemment accept\u00c3\u00a9 de pr\u00c3\u00a9sider ce comit\u00c3\u00a9 lors de l\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Assembl\u00c3\u00a9e G\u00c3\u00a9n\u00c3\u00a9rale Annuel de 2009 qui a eu lieu \u00c3\u00a0 Ottawa. Un principal d\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c3\u00a9cole retir\u00c3\u00a9 qui g\u00c3\u00a8re maintenant la premi\u00c3\u00a8re Acad\u00c3\u00a9mie de Softball au Secondaire au Saskatchewan, Don d\u00c3\u00a9vouera la majorit\u00c3\u00a9 de son temps \u00c3\u00a0 promouvoir et enseigner le sport du softball.<\/p>\n

L\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c3\u2030quipe Nationale Senior Masculine a r\u00c3\u00a9cemment remport\u00c3\u00a9 une m\u00c3\u00a9daille de bronze au Championnat du monde de l\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ISF de 2009 pr\u00c3\u00a9sent\u00c3\u00a9 \u00c3\u00a0 Saskatoon, et elle est toujours consid\u00c3\u00a9r\u00c3\u00a9e comme une menace pour la m\u00c3\u00a9daille d\u00e2\u20ac\u2122or.<\/p>\n
