{"id":3983,"date":"2010-04-21T20:10:10","date_gmt":"2010-04-22T03:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fastpitchwest.com\/morningbrief\/?p=3983"},"modified":"2010-04-21T20:10:27","modified_gmt":"2010-04-22T03:10:27","slug":"world-champs-soldier-on-despite-thinning-field","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fastpitchwest.com\/morningbrief\/?p=3983","title":{"rendered":"World champs soldier on despite thinning field"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img src=\"http:\/\/news.therecord.com\/App_Themes\/TheStar\/images\/recordlogo.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>BY CHRISTINE RIVET, RECORD STAFF<\/em><\/p>\n<p>KITCHENER \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Another day, another pair of elite ball teams drop off the face of the Earth.<\/p>\n<p>International men\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fastball absorbed another pitch in the ribs, as the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s No. 2 and No. 3 ranked club teams, Nebraska-based Broken Bow Patsy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s and Saskatoon Aspen Interiors, were put into mothballs recently.<\/p>\n<p>That leaves the two-time defending International Softball Congress champion Kitchener Rivershark Twins standing atop the shrinking mountain that is senior men\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fastpitch.<\/p>\n<p>Since last season, five of the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s top eight teams have folded, including perennial powerhouse, the Farm Tavern of Madison, Wis.<\/p>\n<p>Even the stodgy ISC stood up and took notice late last season, throwing the gates open at the world tournament to intermediate teams because of a shortage of senior-level clubs.<\/p>\n<p>The R-Twins will stay the course, though as they plan to compete at six major tournaments this season, including the Canadian championship in Charlottetown in late August.<\/p>\n<p>The Kitchener club will make a pair of local appearances, at their own Legends tournament on June 25-27, at Kitchener\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Peter Hallman Ball Yard, and at the nearby Tavistock Rocks weekend on July 16-18.<\/p>\n<p>As the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s elite (read: moneyed) teams dry up faster than the beer tent at closing time, it is either the best thing or the worst thing to happen to the game. Depends on your take.<\/p>\n<p>On one hand, it levels the playing field for the also-rans as Patsy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s and Saskatoon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s players presumably will now be dispersed throughout North America\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s remaining teams.<\/p>\n<p>On the other, those elite clubs left standing, like the Rivershark Twins, have fewer worthy opponents.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153You just want to see good competition out there so anytime a good team folds, that hurts,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said R-Twins coach Larry Lynch.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t expect the R-Twins to gobble up fastball castaways like Aussie aces Adam Folkard (Broken Bow) and Andrew Kirkpatrick (Saskatoon).<\/p>\n<p>The R-Twins already have their full complement of the ISC-allowed six all-world players.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153As far as I know, our roster is set,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Lynch. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We are pretty happy with it.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>crivet (at) therecord.com<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY CHRISTINE RIVET, RECORD STAFF KITCHENER \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Another day, another pair of elite ball teams drop off the face of the Earth.
