{"id":4380,"date":"2010-07-15T06:47:26","date_gmt":"2010-07-15T13:47:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fastpitchwest.com\/morningbrief\/?p=4380"},"modified":"2010-07-15T06:47:26","modified_gmt":"2010-07-15T13:47:26","slug":"usa-edges-canada-in-first-yukon-exhibition-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.fastpitchwest.com\/morningbrief\/?p=4380","title":{"rendered":"USA edges Canada in First Yukon Exhibition Game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Whitehorse, YK) The Canadian Women&#8217;s National Softball Team<br \/>\nmade things interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning,<br \/>\nbut it was not enough as the United States held on for a 5-4<br \/>\nwin in the first of two exhibition games in Whitehorse, Yukon.<br \/>\nThe two teams will square off one last time on Wednesday night<br \/>\nat 6:30pm PDT.<\/p>\n<p>The United States opened the scoring in the top of the second,<br \/>\nas Ashley Charters and Valerie Arioto started the inning with<br \/>\nsingles. Charters scored on a single by Shawna Wright, and a<br \/>\ndouble steal set up USA with runners on second and third. Chelsea<br \/>\nBramlett then hit a shallow fly ball that got just over the shortstop<br \/>\nto score both runners, giving the Americans a 3-0 lead.<\/p>\n<p>Canada answered in the bottom of the third inning on a leadoff<br \/>\nhomerun by Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, New York). Jenn Yee (North<br \/>\nDelta, BC) then walked and Jen Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) later<br \/>\nsingled to put runners on first and second with one out, but<br \/>\nthe next two hitters struck out to end the threat.<\/p>\n<p>The United States re-established the three-run lead in the top<br \/>\nhalf of the fifth, as Kaitlin Cochran singled and advanced to<br \/>\nsecond on an errant throw to first, and then scored on another<br \/>\nbad throw to second base following a base hit by Ashley Charters.<\/p>\n<p>Canada responded with another run in the bottom of the sixth,<br \/>\nwhen Jen Salling led off with a double off the wall in right<br \/>\nfield and scored on a single by Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph, ON) through<br \/>\nthe left side of the infield. Canada managed to get two runners<br \/>\non base, but was unable to bring them in to score.<\/p>\n<p>After Team USA added another run on a two-out solo homerun by<br \/>\nValerie Arioto in the top of the seventh, Canada fought back<br \/>\nin the bottom of the inning. Jenn Yee got things started with<br \/>\na one-out double off the right field wall and scored on a two-run<br \/>\nhomerun to centerfield off the bat of Sheena Lawrick (Calgary,<br \/>\nAB), cutting the lead to 5-4. After a strikeout, Kaleigh Rafter<br \/>\nforced a two-out walk, but American pitcher Angela Tincher struck<br \/>\nout the final batter to end the game.<\/p>\n<p>Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) took the loss in the pitchers circle<br \/>\nfor Canada, allowing five runs (four earned) on 11 hits, striking<br \/>\nout eight batters in the full seven innings. American starting<br \/>\npitcher Blaire Luna allowed one run on two hits and five walks<br \/>\nwith two strikeouts in two innings pitched, while Jordan Taylor<br \/>\nearned the win by pitching three and a third innings allowing<br \/>\none run on three hits.
