Ron Ortega Memorial Gears Up for 5th
Annual Charitable Tournament
BOB
OTTO / Yucaipa, CA
It’s planned bigger, better and has been christened with a new name.
The Ron Ortega Memorial Tournament will now be known as the “Ron Ortega
Memorial International Tournament.”
“Since we are attracting teams from other countries, it just made sense
to add International to our title,” said Co-Tournament Director, Brian
McNaughton, who along with Mel Johnson, have been the tournament’s
driving forces for four years.
McNaughton says that teams from Canada (from British Columbia and
Ontario provinces), Mexico and southwestern U.S. have shown strong
interest in attending.
“If the interest keeps up I may not have to hunt down (Major- ASA Class
A) teams this year,” said McNaughton. “My phone has been ringing with
teams asking about our tournament.” To avoid conflicts with other
southern California tournaments, the dates have been moved to August 14
– 15.
“Teams I talked with said that our July dates conflicted with their
other tournament schedules, so we decided to move it to August,” said
McNaughton. Which, he added, makes for a perfect tune up for the NAFA
AAA and A Major National Tournament, Aug. 26 – 29. Along with the ASA
Class A nationals, Sept. 2 – 6.
With a $350 entry fee, and a field limited to eight (8) Major - Class A
teams, the pool play format guarantees three games on Saturday with the
top two teams from each pool advancing to playoffs on Sunday. Cash
prizes and awards will go to the top two teams.
The tournament sight is once again beautiful Martin Luther King Park,
just minutes from Oceanside with its beautiful beaches, entertainment
and restaurants. All profits from the non-profit tournament go to
benefit the Special Olympics.
(If my work schedule permits, we may offer action, team photos, and
portrait digital photography with on-sight printing, or ordering
capabilities at reasonable prices.)

The tournament honors longtime San Diego area fastpitch
pitcher Ron Ortega, and benefit the American Cancer Society in his honor.
