Palm Springs II - Game Recaps
Editor's note: Game
recaps are provided for miscellaneous games where information is available.
We'd love to include all of the games, but need your help. If you
have info, email us:
info@fastpitchwest.com,
including anything showing as "n/a" (not
available) below.
If it seems that there is more
information for the Black Sox and Rounders, you're right, as I'm around to do the
Rounder recaps and Fred Hanker's Black Sox website provides theirs.
(Thanks, Fred) Because I am playing, I can't get to all of the games.
(And they take my PDA away in the bullpen)
Join in? (I have the
scores, just need WP and LP and the Recap). I expect that this page
will grow in the weeks following the tournament, so check back often.
Too much to do at one sitting, so I will chip away. Game numbers
correspond to the game numbers shown on the "Scoreboard" page (click
"up" menu button at left, then "Scoreboard". )
We'll notate new additions
to this page as we go so that you can re-visit this page and know which
ones you haven't already read.

Recap |
The Rounders jumped out
to a 3-0 lead, but PS tied it on RBI hits by Darryl Goree and Marcel
Bernal. This one had plenty of controversy, with no less than
three close plays at the plate. The game went extra innings,
with both teams scoring in the first tie breaker. In the 9th, PS did
not score in their half, while the Rounders did, with John Simmers
stroking a base hit through the middle for the game winner. |

scored 4 in the 3rd to take a 4-2 lead. The sox than had their turn in
the 4th scoring 5. Three consecutive singles by brett semans, bobby
cole and cesar rodriguez set the stage for seldom used david hanker
who has been pressed into service lately with all the sox injuries.

back. With the score tied 4-4 and runners on 1st and 3rd fred hanker

Recap |
Dan Zupp and Gerald
Pyle traded zeros for four innings, until the San Diego bats came
alive in the 5th, batting around for 5 runs. Joe Crawford keyed the
inning, leading off with a base hit, getting two hits in the inning.
Dan Zupp kept the Rounder hitters off balance, and got the key outs
when he needed them to get his team back to the finals for the second
tournament in a row. For the Rounders, it marked big improvement
over their "one and done" Sundays posted in the last two tournaments.
They reached the Final Four with wins in two very toughly contested
morning games, 5-4 in 9 innings over Palm Springs, and 4-3 over the
Amigos. |

Recap |
Against the Edge, in the championship game,
the San Diego bats stayed hot, as they scored four in the first and three
more in the second, to put this one away early. In the first inning, after Bobby Lara retired
the first two San Diego batters, Terry Brightwell drew a walk. First
baseman Joe Fernandez followed with a single and both scored on a double
by San Diego shortstop Mike York. York played a big role in both the
semi-finals and championship game wins with stellar play at shortstop.
Brian Webb walked. Singles by Joe Crawford and Jaime Nuanez produced
two more runs.
In the San Diego second, Joe Nuanez led off
with a double, scoring on a single by Terry Brightwell. Joe
Fernandez walked, and both Brightwell and Fernandez scored on a triple by
Brian Webb..
The Edge scored their only two runs in the
fourth, on a leadoff single by Robert Aragon, who scored on a double by
"The Legend", Jerry Hoffman, who entered the game for first baseman Rick
McCarthy when he was ejected. An error and base hit by Raul Ramirez
brought home Aaron Sepulveda, who entered to run for Hoffman (as many
know, Sepulveda's father was a teammate of Hoffman's, both playing on the
1983 ISC World Champion Lancaster Chameleons.)
Brian Webb added one more for San Diego,
leading off the fifth with a solo homer to left field, while Terry
Brightwell came home on a throwing error for the final San Diego run, and
the 9-2 margin of victory. Webb's home run went over the left
fielder's head, rolling all the way to the (slow-pitch) fences, some 300
feet away.
