Rounders Win First Tournament Title at Spring Swing Las Vegas, 2001
Kevin Tantlinger tossed a five-hit shutout, and catcher Donald Jewitt
had three hits and two runs batted in to lead the El Segundo Rounders to a
5-0 victory over the Las Vegas Hitmen in the championship game of the SPRING
SWING 2001 fastpitch tournament, Sunday March 18th.
Tantlinger finished with three victories to grab the MVPitcher award,
while Jewitt's clutch hitting in the semi, and final games garnered him the
MVHitter trophy.
The Rounders went unbeaten in four games with victories over Aspen
Ranch, Utah (2-1), Peoria, Arizona Scorpions (2-1), and the tourney host
Hitmen (7-6, 5-0).
The Hitmen finished in second with a 2-2 record, defeating Rawlins, Wyoming
Rebels (6-0), and Peoria (8-3).
Due to unforeseen umpire problems in the Vegas area, the St. Patrick's
weekend event was manned by a four man crew from Utah. The saviors of the
tourney worked a total of 19 games without ever sitting out a game. Special
thanks go out to TJ Brewster, Kim Brewster, Raeldon Palmer, and Casey
Chapoose.
The seven teams entered couldn't have asked for better weather to play
in at the Cheyenne Sports Complex located in North Las Vegas. Temperatures
were in the mid to high 70's, no clouds, and no wind. True Chamber of
Commerce type conditions. A great weekend to jump start the season.
The next tourney scheduled for the Las Vegas Valley will be the LAS
VEGAS SHOOTOUT, a NAFA "AA / A" World Series Qualifier. It will be a 3 game
minimum scheduled for May 12-13 with berths to Hutchinson, Kansas on the line
for the NAFA World Series in August. Interested teams please contact Nevada
NAFA Director David Bell at (702) 242-5215, or email to the address listed
