Best of the West 2001
Palmdale CA -
July 30, 2001
The Web Site Committee of the International Softball
Congress (ISC) has now added five more games to it's
growing archival database of streaming audio. The newly added games are
from the recently
completed Best Of The West Men's Fastpitch Softball
Tournament at Palmdale, CA, won by the Larry H.
Miller Toyota team of Salt Lake City, Utah. The Miller Team defeated The
SoCal Bucks and their
pitcher Mark Bennet 6-0 in the Championship game. This was
Miller Toyota's final tune-up before attempting to
win the ASA Major National Championships, and ISC World Tournament, in the
next 3 week period.
Miller Toyota's Brandon Burt, the burly First Baseman /
Designated Player won the Tournament Most Valuable
Player Award, with 9 hits in his 15 official At Bats, for a sizzling .600
Batting Average.
Dewey Dyck, Miller Toyota pitcher posted a 2-0 won loss
record for the Tournament, with both wins coming
over the SoCal Bucks, first in the Saturday Round
Robin game, and then in the Championship game. In winning the Tournament's
Outstanding Pitcher Award, Dyck struck out 25, and
gave up only 4 hits, in his twelve innings of shut-out work, taming the
usually powerful bats of the Bucks.
"Unfortunately, the audio production quality of our
webcasts from The Best of the West Tournament, was
somewhat problematic. It was definitely not as good as our previous
Pioneer Days Tournament coverage from the press Box
at the Big Cottonwood Softball Complex.
It really helps to be inside an enclosed Press Box,
especially when conditions are as windy as it was in
Palmdale," said Dave Blackburn, Producer of the Best of The West
Tournament webcast.
"I was happy to recently learn that we will be in our own
enclosed room within the Gelein Field Press Box, when we produce our live
audio Webcasts of game coverage from the 2001 ISC World Tournament. I am confident that the overall quality of our
live audio production from Eau Claire will certainly exceed the fidelity
of our original test at the 2001 Pioneer Days Tournament." Blackburn
added.
Games covered live from the best of The West Tournament in Palmdale that are now available in the Archives include the
following 5 games :
(1) The SoCal Bucks 5-4 Victory over the Fresno Team Lyons.
Mark Bennett gets the pitching victory over Mike Lorange.
(2) Miller Toyota's 4-1 victory over Fresno team Lyons.
Pete Meredith's 14 Strikeout performance gets victory over
Tony Peoples.
(3) Miller Toyota's 3-0 victory
over The SoCal Bucks. Dewey
Dyck's 3 hits, and 17 strikeouts paced Miller Toyota over
Mark Bennett.
(4) Miller Toyota's 6-2 win over Quest Fastpitch of
Lakewood. 19 Y.O. NZ native
Thomas Cameron gave up 6 hits, and struck out 6 to best
Dennis Webb.
(5) Miller Toyota's 6-0 Championship game victory as Dewey
Dyck gets his
second shut-out victory, with an 8-strikeout, 1-hitter over
the SoCal Bucks.
Email reports have come in from fastpitch enthusiasts
listening to the live and archived webcasts, from
all around the world, in places like Australia, New Zealand, Argentina,
Canada, and Mexico. The games are now available on
any Web connected computer in the world that can utilize the freely
available Windows Media Player from Microsoft.
Our objective in this first year is to build a live
audience of listeners, that will continue to grow
through the ISC World Tournament Championship Game. It is hoped that the
live worldwide online audience of listeners for the ISC Championship game
outnumbers the total fans watching the ISC title
game live, at Carson Park's Gelein Field, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Palmdale, CA - July 23, 2001 -
The 2001 Annual Best of the West Men's Open Fastpitch Tournament
will be held on Saturday July
28, and Sunday July 29 at the 2-diamond fastpitch softball complex
located in George McAdam
Memorial Park, in the City of Palmdale, CA. Mr. Roy Stout is the Umpire in
Chief, and his capable crew in Blue will handle all of the umpiring
duties.
This is as good a field as we
have ever had in the long history of this tournament." said Dave
Blackburn,
Best of The West Tournament
Director and ISC Area Commissioner for the state of California. "My work
on
this 2001 Tournament is
dedicated to the memory of the late Steve Gfellers, who always welcomed
Men's
Fastpitch Tournaments into the
City of Palmdale, and was a great supporter of the game."
Mr. Gfellers, who ran the
softball program for the Parks and Recreation Department, at the city of
Palmdale, suddenly passed away, of heart failure, earlier this summer,
at the tender age of only 44. Steve's tireless contributions to Men's
fastpitch softball will be greatly missed here on the West Coast.
There is a chance, that
selected 2001 Best of The West tournament games will be webcast, in live
audio, as a final test before the live productions take place at the 2001
ISC World Tournament, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. There are still some
technical issues to work out at McAdam Park, before final announcements
regarding the Webcast status, become clearer, later on this week.
