Team USA tops Argentina 7-0 in Final Pool Play Game, Enter Playoffs as the only unbeaten team

February 5, 2004, 12:30am California time/3:30am in Ontario/February 6, 9:30pm New Zealand time.....Pool Play has concluded.

The USA will enter the playoffs with a 6-0 record, finishing up with a 7-0 win over Argentina in a Pool B matchup. Travis Price (2-0) of Southern California was the winning pitcher, entering the game in the 3rd, in a 0-0 ballgame after Doug Gillis went the first two. The game was scoreless until
the 5th when Team USA put three runs on the board.

Todd Schultz singled, then went to third on a throwing error by the catcher.  Todd Garcia brought Schultz home on an RBI fielder's choice. Steve Schott reached on an error, Garcia to third. Adam La Londe pinch ran for Schott.  Kyle Magnusson singled home Garcia for the second run. Magnusson out at
second, but La Londe scoring.

In the 7th, Team USA hit for the cyle to score four more runs. Chris Delarwelle pinch hit for Garcia, and started things with a single (Garcia re-entering). Joe Morales doubled, Garcia stopping at third. Adam LaLonde tripled home two. One out later, Ross Dey capped the inning with a two run home run.

Doug Middleton came on in the 7th to close out the final frame.

Final score: USA 7, Argentina 0

The United States are now the only unbeaten team at the NZCT men's softball world champs in Christchurch after defending champions New Zealand were beaten by Canada tonight 5-4 infront of a crowd of just under 5000 people.

Both Canada and New Zealand now have a loss in Pool A, meaning Canada will take the top seeding into the play-offs starting Friday. They'll play Japan on Friday, while New Zealand meet the United States.

In the other games tomorrow Australia, who finished third in Pool A will meet Argentina, who finished fourth in Pool B while Samoa, who finished fourth in Pool A will meet the Czech republic, who finished third in Pool
A.

The Americans continues their unbeaten run when they beat Argentina 7-nil tonight to complete pool play.

New Zealand showed their intention not to fire all their shots in tonight's game against Canada by putting part-time pitcher Karl Gollan on the mound. The leftie did a good job of tying down the Canadian line-up, which is dominated by left handed hitters, for much of the game, and until the 7th
looked like he had done enough to win the game.

Canada made a good start, scoring a run in the top of the second after Dean Holoien was walked, and adding another in the 3rd through a home run by Bob Court. New Zealand hit back in the 4th when Mark Sorenson hit safely and was batted in by Thomas Makea to make it 2-1. Then the Kiwis hit the front in the 5th when they exposed a few cracks in the Canadian field.

Patrick Shannon hit to third base, but was gifted second and third when the firstbaseman failed to glove what looked like a reasonable throw. Then pinch hitter Taifau Matai hit to leftfield to score the run and tie the game up. Top of the order Clayton Willocks was next and he put down a bunt. The fielded ball hit him in the back and that allowed Nathan Nukunuku, back in after the pinch hit, to score. Willocks followed on a fielders choice on Stacey McLean, giving New Zealand a 4-2 lead, which they held going into the top of the 7th.

Canada made the best possible start with Holoien getting on with a hit to centrefield and Terry Challis joined him on base with a similar hit. Then Rob Gay came in for a pinch hit and smacked a riseball from Gollan way back into the crowd to win the game.

Earlier today Australia confirmed their third placing in Pool A with a
12-nil win over the Netherlands. Samoa won a sudden-death match against the Philippines 6-nil to clinch fourth place and put the Asians out of the tournament.

South Africa finished off their campaign with a 6-1 win over Venezuela while Great Britain finished on a high note beating Hong Kong 9-nil.

"Canada won 5-4 over host New Zealand and clenched first place in Pool A"

(Ottawa, ON) - Canada and New Zealand battled this morning in their last game of round robin action which was the deciding game for the top two finishes in their pool. Canada won 5-4 over New Zealand scoring the winning runs in the top of the 7th to secure the win. After suffering a loss against Samoa earlier in the tournament, Canada re-bounded by winning the rest of their games and stealing 1st place in Pool A from New Zealand who had been undefeated thus far. Canada was guaranteed a top-two finish in their pool after Australia beat Samoa yesterday. Canada will go up against Japan, No. 2 in Pool B tomorrow.

Canada was first on the scoreboard when they scored one run in the 2nd inning. Dean Holoein drew a walk followed by Terry Challis who hit a deep fly ball and Holoein tagged up to move to 2nd. Sean O'Brien then hit a single to right to score Holoein. In the 3rd inning, Bob Court hit a solo shot to rightfield to give Canada its 2nd run. In the 4th, New Zealand battled back. Black Socks batter Jarrad Martin drew a walk followed by Mark Sorenson who hit a double and with runners on 2nd and 3rd, Thomas Makea  stepped up to the plate. There was a collision at home plate with Catcher Sean O'Brien on a passed ball and as a result, runner Jarrad Martin was called out on an obstruction call. Canada had to make offensive changes. Canada's 1st baseman Craig Crawford moved to Catcher and Darren Box entered at first. With just one out and Sorenson on 3rd, Makea made a gig to right and scored Sorenson. In the 5th, New Zealand's Patrick Shannon, hit a stiff shot to 3rd, and despite the good fielding play by Jody Eidt who caught it and fired it to 1st , Shannon ran all the way to 3rd base on an error. Two batters later, a NZ pinch hitter stepped up to the plate and hit a single to left scoring Shannon. Starting back at the top of the order, Willick bunted and Whitten picked up the bunt but mistakenly threw it to rightfield and NZ
scored. McLean then stepped up and hit into a fielder's choice scoring Willick and giving New Zealand the lead 4-2. But, Canada responded in the 7th. Dean Holoein came up and hit a single to centre and Kevin Schellenberg came into pinch run. Terry Challis then hit a single to centre followed by Darren Box who sacrificed moving Holoein and Challis to 2nd and 3rd. Rob Gray came in to pinch hit for Chris Jones and hit a 3-run blast scoring Holoein, Schellenberg and himself to give Canada the edge. New Zealand was unable to step ahead as Canadian Pitcher Darren Zack once again zipped the door. There were great defensive plays on both sides but Canada committed 2 errors to open the door for the Black Socks to capitalize in the 5th however, Canada answered the call in the 7th and took the victory.

"I was trying to see and hit the ball and put it in play somewhere," stated Rob Gray who hit the 3 run blast. "When O'Brien got hurt, everybody on the team was thinking of his health. It's pretty amazing when you don't have to worry about who is going to fill in his shoes, because you have so much depth in every position - especially given that he's such a good player.  Gray said that as far as the team goes, there is a comfort and discomfort in knowing that any of the seventeen players can start at any time. And, that this is the big difference between this team and a club team and when you
get the chance, you have to be ready and you appreciate all the good players around you.

Sean Whitten stated: "I felt good on the mound but missing some spots coupled with some miscues by the team, cost us. But, we all felt supportive knowing and feeling that we could always come back."

The Winning Pitcher was Canada's Darren Zack and the losing Pitcher was New Zealand's Karl Gollan.

Canada had 5 runs on 6 hits and committed 2 errors. NZ had 4 runs on 5 hits and committed no errors. Dean Holoein got the start and pitched 3 innings giving up 1 hit, no walks and 3 strikeouts. Sean O'Brien was the starting catcher. Sean Whitten pitched 11/3 innings and gave up 4 runs on 3 hits and no strikeouts. Darren Zack pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up 1 hit, no walks and had 3 strikeouts. New Zealand's Karl Gollan who pitched 7 innings, gave up 6 hits and struck out 4 batters.

NZCT Men's Softball World Champs, Christchurch
Day Seven - Christchurch - February 4

Australia have clinched their place in the play-offs at the NZCT men's softball world champs in Christchurch with a convincing 8-nil win over Samoa tonight.

It was a disappointing result for the Samoans who have been the
giant-killers of the tournament. But they never really fired a shot against an Australian side that came out with all of its heavy artillery.

Australia's win was scored on the back of some great hitting by their top-order, Michael Tanner and Justin Golds both getting 2 hits from three at bats. The Steelers scored three runs in the first, three in the second and then one in both the third and fourth innings.

For Samoa only one batter managed a safe hit, Tony Niu, off the pitching of Andrew Kirkpatrick.

New Zealand and the United States remain unbeaten after day seven. The Kiwis scored an 11-3 win over Venezuela today while the Americans beat Great Britan 5-nil.

New Zealand made the best possible start to their game, with Thomas Makea hitting a grand slam home run in the top of the first as part of a five-run spree. But the bats then went quiet for four innings and Venezuela came back with three runs in the bottom of the 4th with the help of hits from Edwin Linares, Hector Parra, Manuel Moreno.

But then the Kiwi bats started to fire again in the 6th, this time Donny Hale and Brad Rona with home runs, as New Zealand added another six runs to their tally to clinch the win. For New Zealand Jimmy Wana faced the first 6 batters for 4 strikeouts and no hits, with Michael Gaiger coming in 19 batters and giving up four hits while taking 4 strikeouts.

Venezuela used four pitchers in all, the best of them Jhon Garcia who faced 23 batters for 6 hits and one strikeout.

In Pool A New Zealand still lead on 12 points, from Canada on 10 with Australia on 8 and Samoa on 6. With the Philippines and Venezuela still within striking distance Samoa need a win tomorrow against the Philippines to make the top four.

In Pool B the United States scored a 5-nil win over Great Britain with Michael White on the mound. The Brits were spearheaded by Steve Jackson, and interestingly both he and White were part of the New Zealand team that won the world champs in Midland, Michigan in 1996.

The Czech Republic are second on the points table - they had the bye today - and Japan have confirmed their top four spot with a 7-nil win over Botswana. The tournament's now over for Botswana, with just six games in pool B. They finish with a record of 1 win and 5 losses.

Argentina should be the fourth qualifiers in pool B, which has transpired to be a much less competitive pool than pool A.

In other results today the Philippines beat the Netherlands 6-1 and Argentina beat Hong Kong 9-nil.

Results: Day Seven

Netherlands 1 Philippines 6
USA 5 Great Britain 0
Canada 5 South Africa 0
Argentina 9 Hong Kong 0
Japan 7 Botswana 0

Day 7 - USA beats Great Britain 5-0, and is now 5-0

Team USA vs. Great Britain matched a couple of veteran ISC hurlers, Michael White and Steve Jackson.  Michael White pitched his USA teammates to a 5-0 win, scattering 6 hits over 7 innings and striking out 4. Three errors by Great Britain didn't help their effort. Team USA banged out 10 hits, scoring 3 in the 2nd to put the game away early.  Interestingly both Jackson and White were part of the New Zealand team that won the world champs in Midland, Michigan in 1996

In the 2nd, Todd Schultz, Mike Dryer and Chris Miljavac had singles to key the scoring.

In the 5th, Team USA added a run when Mike Dryer tripled and came home to score on an error by the catcher on an attempted pick-off play.

The Americans added a fifth run in the 6th when Joe Morales of El Paso Texas singled, and came home to score on a base hit by Adam La Londe.

Team USA is now a perfect 5-0 with only one more game remaining in the pool play portion of the ISF World Championships. They will face Argentina (2-3) at 12 a.m. Thursday New Zealand time, 9pm Wednesday California time.

Wednesday February 4 - Day Seven

American Chad Boom has blasted his way to the top of the batting statistics on day seven of the NZCT Men's Softball World Champs in Christchurch.

New Zealand and the United States continued their march towards the play-offs on day six of the NZCT Men's Softball World Champs in Christchurch.

They're now the only unbeaten teams at the tournament, but while the Americans were commanding today in their 19-nil win over the Czech Republic, it took the Kiwis a while to get going against the Philippines, who they beat 7-nil.

The Black Sox were unable to score in their first two turns at bat, managed two runs in a short burst in the 3rd innings, before finally coming to life in the fourth with four runs to end the game early under the new 7 run mercy rule. New Zealand finished with 11 hits in all, including two from the bat of Stacey McLean and two from Patrick Shannon.

The Americans in contrast massacred the Czech Republic, who went into the game unbeaten after wins in their first three games. They collected 14 hits including 3 from the bat of Chad Boom - a home run and two doubles - and two each from Steve Schott, Chris Miljavac and  Adam La Londe. Boom also picked up five RBI's.

New Zealand lead pool A on 10 points from Canada on 8, and Samoa and Australia on 6. The Americans lead pool B on 8 points. Earlier Great Britain and the Philippines both scored their first wins of the tournament.

In Pool B, Great Britain beat Botswana 8-nil while in Pool A, the Philippines had to survive a late comeback from South Africa to take their game 9-6.

Great Britain built their lead slowly against Botswana, scoring two runs in their first turn at bat, then another in the 4th innings and one in the 5th,, before finishing with a flurry in the 7th with a four run spree.

Pat Walsh picked up three hits and got on base with an error on his 4th turn at bat, while Latham Tawhai and Rik Morgan both had two hits. Steve Jackson pitched all 7 innings for 5 hits and 10 strikeouts.

In Pool A, the Philippines jumped out to an early 6-1 lead on the back of a five-run spree in the bottom of the third innings against South Africa. Orlando Binarao, Manalito Binarao, Isidro Abello and Melvin Villegas all recorded safe hits, and they were assisted by two errors in the South African infield.

But South Africa came back with four runs in the top of the 5th to reduce the Philippines lead to just one run, Gary Jocobs, Greg Barrett and  Taria Moosa all hitting safely, but again assisted by two walks and a hit pitch.  South Africa tied the game up in the top of the 6th when Gareth Scott hit to leftfield and was batted in by John Potts. But the Philippines sealed the win in the bottom of the 6th when they scored three runs with the help of hits by Jasper Cabrera and Manalito Binarao, two walks and an infield error.

Australia kept their play-of hopes alive with an 8-nil win over Venezuela while Japan stayed on track for the play-offs with a 12-nil win over Hong Kong and Canada beat the Netherlands 11-1.

[Christchurch, New Zealand - 2/2/04]- Day Five

(Information courtesy of Andrea Blackshaw)

Samoa have caused another upset at the NZCT Men's Softball World Champs in Christchurch, beating Venezuela 7-4 on day five.

Venezuela finished fifth at the last men's world championship in South Africa, and the result leaves the Samoans, playing in their first world series, well placed to possibly finish in the top two in their pool, behind New Zealand.

That would mean Samoa would take 2 lives into the top eight play-offs,
while the other qualifiers from the pool - likely to be Canada and either
Australia or Venezeula - would have just one and would face sudden death.

The game was tied at 4-all after five innings, with Samoan pitcher Heinie Shannon having given up 7 hits and Venezuela's John Garcia having given up 6. Neither lasted much longer in the game, Mike Roberts coming in for Samoa
in the 6th and Lorry Escalone coming in for Venezuela when they got into trouble in the 7th.

Aaron Neemia and Travis Allen both had two hits for Samoa, and both were instrumental in scoring Samoa's match-winning 3 runs in the top of the 7th.

New Zealand's Black Sox still top Pool A after an 18-5 win over the Netherlands on day five, for their fourth win in as many games. The Black Sox started part-timer Jarrad Martin on the mound, but he got into trouble in the third, when the Netherlands scored all five runs, and was replaced
by Michael Gaiger, who put out the fire.

There was some impressive hitting by the Kiwis with Brad Rona hitting a home run and a triple and Donny Hale smacking a home run as well.

Australia improved their chances of qualifying by beating South Africa 7-2. Canada also put their campaign back on track with two wins - 3-2 over Australia and 8-nil over the Philippines.

Meanwhile in Pool A, Japan and the United States met in the last game of the evening, both going into the match unbeaten. Japan jumped out to an early three runs lead, but the Americans brought it back to 3-2, then scored five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-3 lead, which they held to the end.

The Czech Republic are looking good for a place in the play-offs after posting their third win today, over Great Britain 7-nil.

Botswana scored their first win of the tournament when they beat Hong Kong 8-1.

Canada have put their campaign back on track at the NZCT Men's Softball World Champs in Christchurch with a hard fought 3-2 win over Australia.

Canada, who're seeded second in Pool A, were upset on day two by Samoa, and now need to win every game to be assured of a top two qualifying spot. Four teams will go through from each pool but the top two will have two lives in the page-system play-off.

Australia were also hoping to bounce back from their five innings loss to New Zealand, and coach Bob Harrow will be disappointed again after his team blew two chances to take the game in their last two turns at bat.

Canada jumped out to an early lead through a home run by Jody Eidt in the top of the first innings off young Aussie star Andrew Kirkpatrick. Sean O'Brien repeated the feat in the top of the second to make it 2-nil. Australia came back in the bottom of the third when Joel Southam made base on an infield error and was batted in by Michael Tanner who hit safely up the middle. But the Canadians restored the two run buffer in the top of the 4th when Kevin Schellenberg, running for O'Brien who'd again hit safely,
came home on a wild pitch.

With Canada ahead 3-1, the Aussie Steelers had a chance to tie the game up in the 6th when Nick Underhill replaced Gerald Muizelaar on the mound and made a shaky start. He walked the first batter he faced, Tanner, and then put Justin Golds on with a hit pitch. But Underhill settled down to retire the side with no damage done and two runners stranded.

In the bottom of the 7th the Aussies again looked set to make a late charge when pitcher Andrew Kirkpatrick led off with a safe infield hit and was joined on base by Zenon Winters who hit a single to left field, both runners advancing when the fielder over-ran the ball. Southam was the next batter and he hit straight back to the pitcher, allowing the Canadians to tag Kirkpatrick coming home. A fielders choice on the next batter, David Newsome, allowed Winters to score to make it 3-2, but Tanner hit back to

ISF World Championships -  Day Three Report

(courtesy of Media Manager, Andrea Blackshaw)

[Christchurch, New Zealand - 1/31/04] - Samoa has scored a stunning upset at the NZCT Men's Softball World Championships in Christchurch tonight, beating Canada 3-1.

The Samoans are ranked 15th in this their first world championship, and lost their previous two games here - to New Zealand 3-1 and to the Netherlands 10-8. But tonight they were all class as they claimed one of the biggest scalps in the softball world, the Canadians ranked fourth in the world and second behind New Zealand in Pool B here.

The win came on the back of a great pitching performance by Aucklander Heinie Shannon who gave up 3 hits and took 9 strikeouts from the 25 batters he faced. Samoa scored their first run in the top of the first innings when Aaron Neemia got on base on a fielders choice and was batted in by Gene
Robinson. Canada tied the game up in the third innings when Sean O'Brien hit a single shot home run.

Samoa went ahead again in the 5th when Tony Niu made base on a fielders choice and came home when Kurt Allen smacked the ball over the centrefield fence.

For Canada Dean Holoien started on the mound and gave up five hits to the 19 batters he faced. He was replaced in the 5th after the home run, Darren Zack coming in in relief and facing the last nine batters for one hit.  Samoan coach Mike Forsyth said the team were disappointed to lose to the Netherlands yesterday, and their focus had possibly been too much on making the top four and not taking it a game at a time. He says a change in attitude today was the key to the win.

The result will make things interesting in Pool A where the top four seeds New Zealand, Canada, Venezuela and South Africa are facing a strong threat from both Samoa and Australia. It will make tomorrow's game between Canada and Australia an even more interesting one.

Earlier, New Zealand scored an emotional win over Australia. The Black Sox beat the Aussie Steelers by the surprisingly big scoreline of 9-2, and they dedicated their win to Cameron Duncan, a young softballer and film maker who tragically lost a battle with cancer last year. After the game the Black Sox stayed on at the park to watch a screening of the short film Cameron Duncan made shortly before his death. The film, called Strikezone, is about a softball team that wins a championship for its dying coach, the role of the coach played by Cameron himself. A stand at Smokefree Ballpark has also been named after the teenager, who was made an honorary member of the Black Sox last year.

The New Zealanders wrapped up their win inside five innings, with the 7 run mercy rule coming into play. And while the Aussies lost, they did achieve one of their goals, which was not exposing their number one pitcher, 19 year old Andrew Kirkpatrick to the New Zealanders. The Black Sox were on fire from the very first pitch, scoring five runs in their first turn at bat and four in their second. The stand-outs were Dion Nukunuku and Mark Sorenson with two hits and Thomas Makea with a home run.

Australia scored two runs of their own in the top of the third innings, Justin Golds getting on base on a fielders choice and batted in by Mike Harrow. Harrow's hit went up the middle and the ball went under the glove of the diving centrefielder, allowing Harrow an error-assisted in the park home run.

In other Pool A action, South Africa held off a strong fightback from the Netherlands to score a 4-3 win. The South Africans led 4-1 after five innings, but the Netherlands came back through a home run by Sendly Reina in the 6th and a run scored by Tim Verbrugger in the 7th to close the gap. However, South African pitcher Grant Oliver was able to take the last three outs at the plate to extinguish the danger and see his team to a win.

Oliver gave up 8 hits in all, in contrast to four given by two pitchers used by the Netherlands. It was South Africa's first win of the tournament and leaves the Netherlands also with a one win/one loss record.

In Pool B, the United States scored their second win of the tournament, over Hong Kong 7-nil.
Michael White pitched the first 4 innings without giving up a hit, and Travis Price who pitched the last innings gave up just one.

Don Garvey and Adam LaLonde both hit home runs for the Americans, with their run count assisted by two errors and a hit pitch. Hong Kong's only hit came from the bat of Lam Hoi Chung.  In other Pool B action, the Czech Republic beat Botswana 1-nil and Venezuela beat the Philippines 8-1.

Day three of the tournament also saw three recent New Zealand inductees to the International Softball Federation Hall of Fame honoured at Smokefree Ballpark. Wellington's Colin Ward, Canterbury's Cheryl Kemp and Hutt Valley's Merrell Ferguson were all awarded a replica of the plaque that will hang in their honour at the Hall of Fame in Plant City, Florida. The presentations were made by ISF President Don Porter.

Ward was recognised for his contribution as a player and coach, Fergusson for her work as an official and a manager and Kemp for her contribution as a player, coach and administrator. Kemp is one of the main organisers of the world championship in Christchurch.

Team USA Notches 2nd win while Samoa upsets Canada

[Christchurch, New Zealand - 1/30/04] - Team USA notched its second win of the ISF World Championships, with a 7-0 win over Hong Kong, a 1 hitter by veteran Michael White. Team USA returns to the field Sunday at 7pm (4pm Saturday California time) against Japan, which trounced Great Britain in its opener, 9-2.

Meanwhile the first big upset of the tournament occurred today, with Samoa knocking off Canada, which entered the tournament as one of the favorites, while Samoa was ranked 15th. Samoa has been the surprise of the tournament thus far, losing only 3-1 to host New Zealand in the very first game of the tournament, and nearly knocking off the Netherlands, falling 10-8 after taking an 8-7 lead into the 7th inning of that game.

We provide the following report courtesy of Media Manager Andrea Blackshaw:

Day Three, January 31

Samoa have pulled off a stunning upset at the NZCT Men's Softball World Championships in Christchurch tonight.

The Samoans, ranked 15th at the championship, have claimed one of the biggest scalps in world softball, beating Canada 3-1 at Smokefree Ballpark.

The win came on the back of a great pitching display by Aucklander Heinie Shannon and with the help of a home run by Kurt Allen. Canada are ranked fourth in the world and second in Pool A at this championship, so the result will throw a cat among the pigeons as the teams battle for play-off
spots.
