Team Rainey at Decatur Shootout

June 19-20, 2004

Since Fastpitchwest is based in Southern California, you'll excuse us if we devote an extra page here to the local boys, Team Rainey, who have stepped up their schedule in 2004 to including some of the more prestigous tournaments across the country, including the "Decatur Shootout" in Decatur, Illinois.   Read more about their travels in the June 17, 2004 edition of our "Morning Brief".

Return to this page just before the tournament and we'll post a few notes about Team Rainey, as well as coverage of their games during the tournament.

Our thanks to Doug Gray of the Decatur Sports Foundation and Bob Hunt (father of Team Rainey's Chris Hunt) for the information posted here.

8am vs. Bull/Townline of DePere, Wisconsin  (5am PST)
Bull/Townline  2, Team Rainey 1
Team Rainey dropped a heartbreaker this morning, 2-1 when Bull/Townline  hit a 2 run home run in the last inning for the win.

In the 3rd inning, Mike Butler doubled, and came home to score on a single to center by Rod Rainey.   Team Rainey took a 1-0 lead into the 7th inning, when the Bull got an infield single, followed by a home run to give the Bull a 2-1 lead.   Team Rainey did not score in the bottom of the 7th.  Final score: The Bull/Townline of De Pere Wisconsin 2, Team Rainey 1.   Travis Price went the distance, pitched a great game, with only the home run to mar it.

Team Rainey left LAX last night, but due to some flight delays, did not get in until 5:30 a.m. this morning in Decatur and were playing after being up all night.  Tough way to start out, but part of being "Road Warriors" I suppose.

They play again at 3pm EST (12 noon West Coast time). Their final game of the day is against Midland Michigan, which is ranked # 7 in the ISC World (Rainey is currently ranked #17).  I'm told that Michigan's ace, Doug Gillis was not available to make the trip with his team.  We'll post further details today as they become available.

3pm vs. MVD Faro, Ashland Ohio (12noon PST)

Team Rainey 7, MVD Ashland OH 0 (5 inn. mercy)
Team Rainey bounced back from their early morning loss, by mercy ruling the MVD/Faro team of Ashland, Ohio, 7-0.   After scoring only one run in their 8am game, the Rainey bats woke up right from the start of this one.

In the Rainey first inning, Mike Butler walked and was sacrificed over by Roy Guinaldo.  Rod Rainey singled home Butler (his 2nd RBI of the day).  Chris Hunt then ripped a triple, scoring Rod Rainey for their second run.  A bunt by Jason Porto and error on a rundown play turned into a 3rd run.  Nate Devine then singled home Porto for the fourth run of the inning.

Team Rainey added three more runs on a series of errors by MVD Ashland.  Tony Peeples tossed a gem, a 5 inning shutout.   The team will play their final game of the day at 6pm Decatur time (3pm west coast time), against Midland Michigan, the # 7 team in the ISC World rankings.

6pm vs. Midland Explorers, Michigan (3pm PST)

Team Rainey 12, Midland 4
No individual game details on this one, but # 17 ranked Team Rainey knocked off # 7 ranked Midland Explorers, the second top 10 team that Team Rainey has beaten this season (#9 Houston was the other, in Red Rock)

Team Rainey finished Saturday with a 2-1 record, tied with 3 other teams.  Using the tie breaking criteria, Team Rainey advanced to the Consolation round, with only the 2-1 loss at 8am Saturday morning to Bull/Townline WI.

They will play ISC ranked #19 Lafayette Pub Sunday morning for a shot at the Consolation title.

Team Rainey 4, Lafayette Pub, St. Louis MO 0
Tony Peeples tossed a 4-0 shutout, striking out 8 as ISC # 17 ranked Team Rainey eliminated # 19 ranked Lafayette Pub of St. Louis, MO.  Chris Hunt had a 2 run homer for Team Rainey in the win.

This game was a Consolation bracket semifinal, with Team Rainey facing the winner of Indiana/Midland for the consolation title.

In Championship bracket play Sunday, # 4 ranked Circle Tap eliminated # 9 Houston H.I.S., 3-2.  Robbie O'Brien pitched for Circle Tap, and added a 2 run homer, and got help from Dewey Dyck to close out the win.  Rob Schweyer was the tough luck loser.

Circle Tap advanced to the finals against the winner of Bull/Townline (the team that beat Rainey) and the Bloomington Stix.

The weather was great, the beer was cold, most of the games were well-played and competitive and it was a great fastball weekend in Decatur at the Borg Warner Sports Complex.

Will post complete results of games with pitchers and some additional information on play throughout the weekend. Congratulaions to Circle Tap on their successful defense of their title! Thanks to all eleven teams that kept their commitments to play and enjoyed some great fastball this weekend!
