Pitcher Zack lifts County Materials to winBy
Jim Oskola
Post-Crescent staff writer
KIMBERLY — Waiting 2½ hours past the scheduled 7 p.m. start time of the
International Softball Congress World Tournament game between Mara-thon
County Materials and the Waterloo Hallman Twins wasn’t a problem for
Darren Zack.The burly right-hander pitched a complete-game three-hitter to
lead County Materials to a 5-0 win over the Twins at Sunset Point Park on
Thursday.“You’ve got to get pumped for this,” Zack said. “It’s the ISC,
and it doesn’t happen again till next year.”Zack mixed his pitches well
and allowed only two base runners, who reached via errors, through 4 2/3
innings before Jeff Spenser singled to break up the no-hitter.Twins
batters were swinging late on many of Zack’s pitches, leading to 12
strikeouts.“I was pretty well hitting the spots, and sometimes the ball
was moving nice,” Zack said. “It was just working right for me
tonight.”Hallman Twins first baseman Andy Jackson struck out twice against
Zack.“He had pretty good velocity and pretty much everything going
tonight,” Jackson said.Zack was given a two-run cushion to work with in
the first inning.Rob Gray led off the first for County Materials by
overpowering the second pitch from Twins pitcher Korrey Gareau, sending
the ball over the left-field bleachers.“He threw me a drop ball first
pitch and I thought he was going to come up,” Gray said. “Sure enough, he
did.”County Materials scored its second run of the inning on a single and
stolen base by Darrell Sandback, a walk to Shawn Rychcik and a pair of
wild pitches by Gareau.County Materials picked up two runs off Gareau in
the fourth inning when Patrick Shannon got hit by a pitch and Brad Rona
and Todd Schultz followed with a triple and double, respectively.“Korrey
threw real, real hard, I thought, but a little bit on the straight side,”
Gray said. “Hard and straight, eventually you will catch up with
it.”Gareau was relieved after the fourth inning, giving up seven hits and
one walk while striking out five.Shannon added an inside-the-park home run
in the sixth inning off Twins reliever Trevor Wardell to account for the
final run.

Canadian men's softball team wins seventh straight Pan Am title - USA
women's softball wins gold
By LORI EWING
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (CP) - Of all the gold medals Canadian
men's softball teams have won at the Pan Am Games, Thursday's was one of
the toughest to gain.
After a four-hour rain delay, Canada took to the soggy field at Juan
Pueblo Duarte Park to win their seventh consecutive Pan American Games
gold medal with a 4-2 victory over their perennial rival United States.
"It was important for us because we weren't the favourite this time,"
first baseman Mike Macumber said. "The U.S. won the qualifier and they
were the favourite.
"I play club ball all over North America and all I heard all year was the
Americans were going to be tough to beat."
The Canadian women's team, meanwhile, lost the gold-medal game 4-0 to the
United States. The Canadian women had also had to sit and wait through a
three-and-a-half hour delay when a torrential downpour sent people
scrambling for cover before a playoff game earlier in the day.
They defeated the Dominican Republic 4-2 to advance to the gold game which
began immediately following the playoff game.
The Canadian men won with a big sixth inning, led off by a double by
centre-fielder Rob Giesbrecht of Landmark, Man. Second baseman Bob Court
of Duncan, B.C., walked, then Ron White of Sebringville, Ont., hit a
double into the right-field corner.
"The first two at-bats he had come inside on me both times, so I knew he
might try again, so I just geared up and tried to drive it as hard as I
could, and luckily it got by the first baseman down the line and we got
two runs off it," said White.
"It's just an unbelievable feeling, you wait for that last strike, and
finally you get it and you let out a big yell, go mob everyone on the
field," added White, laughing.
Canada got on the scoreboard early when Giesbrecht hit a leadoff home run.
In the fourth, when the U.S. led 2-1, Giesbrecht led off the inning with a
single, followed by another single by Court, scoring Giesbrecht from first
base.
Canada, who went 7-0 in the tournament, has won all but the first softball
tournament at the Pan Am Games, and has played the United States in every
gold medal game.
It was the fifth Pan Am gold for Canadian coach Mark Smith. He played on
three Canadian winners, and has coached twice, as an assistant in 1999 in
Winnipeg, and head coach here.
"You never get tired of winning gold medals, you never get tired of
beating Americans," said Smith, who is from Halifax. "These kids came in
here considered second-best, a lot of these players hadn't been on the
national team before. They stepped up and refused to die, refused to let
anybody beat them."
White, a newcomer to the Canadian Pan Am team, said there was a bit of
pressure coming in to repeat.
"It's tough to repeat, and to do it seven times in a row, it's crazy,"
said White, a third baseman. "But as long as we played the way we could
play, then it was possible."
"We just knew if we played to our ability, we were the best team here and
some people outside of this doubted that," added Giesbrecht. "We proved to
them we're the best team here."
