While still remaining a few months to the end of the year, and the Pan American Championships in Hermosillo on the horizon, these three players from Club Atletico Parana students have written glorious pages for softball Argentina in the last month.

In late July, with Argentina, hung the gold medal in the V ALBA Games 2011, played in Maracay, Venezuela, beating the hosts by four games to three in a series to seven games. And in mid-August, with his team in the United States, Minnesota Angels, stroked the podium at the 2011 ISC World Tournament, falling 1-0 to Saskatoon Diamondbacks, to remain in fourth place teams tournament in the world . To put the icing on the cake, was named pitcher Potolicchio First Team All World Tournament, while the infield Bittor joined the Second Team All World.

“Our team started the tournament ranked ninth in the standings and finished in the top four in a World Club Championship,” how much Nicolas Bittor, Angels second baseman, already installed at his home in Parana, Entre Rios. “Without a doubt this is a tournament that I will never forget.”

The Angels debuted at the 2011 ISC World Tournament on August 14, facing Hickson Reds. 8-0 victory for Minnesota and Juan Potolicchio, who pitched seven innings allowing only three hits, striking out 13 batters. Argentine colleagues and friends also did well: as “leadoff hitter”, Fernando Petric had two hits in four at-bats, drove in two runs and scoring once, for his part, Nicholas Bittor, fifth in the order, had three hits in four possibilities, two RBI and a run scored. First hurdle overcome for a team that began its participation in the tournament better.

“From the beginning we were very good. Beyond that the season could not win any tournaments we played, we all ended up in a good position, “reflects Fernando Petric. “The team knew we were ninth, and we could get down a couple of places. I personally thought that finish in the top six would be a good season finale, as the teams we had on, until the fifth, were on our level and if we were facing could get to beat them. ”

The second appointment was against Pennsylvania Power, a team that had been left out of the Angels ISC 2010, and which had already surpassed the ASA 2011, a week before the ISC. And again ended with victory for Minnesota, 3-1. Potolicchio second win under his belt, throwing seven innings with a run against, five hits and nine strikeouts. His counterpart, Sean Cleary, also launched perfectly, getting only two hits, three runs (only one earned) and striking out eight. Coincidentally was Bittor who hit the two hits that Cleary allowed his team. Pennsylvania Power and Sean Cleary will be part of this story again, but that will come later. At the moment, second victory in as many games for Minnesota, and before the defending champion and number one team ISC Ranking: Jarvis Travelers.

“So far so normal and according to our expectations, hoping the next game would be against Travellers Jarvis,” said Potolicchio. “I’m honest, going into the plate pitcher in that game knew that if I am wrong with some batter was going to pay dearly. So I played well against the pressure, nerves, and the line up of them were against our little Angels Minnesota. ”

And the best team in the world stood with the party (as he did each of the games played in the ISC 2011) with the result 4-1. First defeat for Minnesota, which forced the Argentine team to fall to the key losers and face elimination in every game. Moreover, the next day, Minnesota should face two games on the same day to stay alive in the ISCWT.

“From there we went to the losers bracket and Juan grew game by game, I saw it as never before, all games were tight, and Juan kept very well” indicates “Pajarito” Petric.

First turn Silverhawks Backersfield beat Minnesota 4-1. Potolicchio controlled the match with a superb performance: 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R and 17 K. Fernando Petric provided with a racing team, while Bittor (and placed third in the batting order) worked with one hit in three innings, and two runs scored.

“That same night we played against PA Power again for the pass to the quarterfinals. The whole team was very confident in that game, in theory, should be ours, “says the pitcher 29 years old. “But something gave me a bad feeling because we had several games over and assumed that at some point, the fatigue would hit me. At the end I think that’s what helped me stay focused as possible. ”

And Potolicchio gave one of the best games of his life. The man from Hope pitched a no-hitter in 10 innings against Pennsylvania Power (rival which, remember, had expired days ago) to the victory of his team 1-0, in what was the best match the event. To put more spice to the game, the pitcher of Pennsylvania, Sean Cleary, was also dominant, since they do not allow a hit or runs in the first contested nine innings in a pitching duel seldom seen in sports history.

Despite her flawless performance, at the close of the eighth inning Potolicchio was inches away from losing the game. John Rozich, the catcher of Pennsylvania, hit a long fly to left, which seemed to leave the park to leave Minnesota in the field and off the ISC World Tournament. The ball soared, sailed on the night of Moline to the astonishment of all present, and began to fall like a dagger in the aspirations of the Angels.

However, left fielder Jeff Mataczynski change the course of history. Standing in the security zone, with its back against the fence, staring at the ball that fate had run, jumped back and fell over the fence caught the ball, robbing the home run, in a move that was taken Ballparkradio by cameras, which would be dubbed “The Catch” (The Catch). This move kept alive Potlicchio perfect game, and the aspirations of the Angels in the contest.

“It was one of the best plays I saw in my life,” says Juan. “While the ball was in the air a thousand things I went through your head, no good, but seeing how he caught that ball Jeff said, ‘We can not lose, we can not remain without a win this match’.”

Emotions not end there. At the close of the ninth with two outs on the board, Giblin badly hit by the second baseman, in a move that appeared to be simple to solve. However, as the lore, the best hunter is also the hare escapes, and Nicolas Bittor could not resolve the play. First batter of Pennsylvania who stood in first, and goodbye to the perfect game Potolicchio.

“Juan was perfect game into the ninth with two outs,” says Bittor, “until the next batter hits the ball with the handle of the bat, towards where I was. The rolling came so easy that I missed, and thanks to my error, the first runner reached base in the game for them, “continued the Colo. “I felt very embarrassed, because I had ruined something unique.”

All we ever heard that sport always gives rematch. And Bittor revenge would come fast, more precisely, one inning later, connecting the square to give it to your computer (and its launcher) the winning run. In addition, Bittor homer that pulled the “no hitter”, and gave her defeat, Sean Cleary, causing over from Karl Gollan, who did not allow a hit in the only innings.

“I had a lot of anger and I could not look Juan in the face” confesses Bittor Colo. “For our next attack, I started the order, and kept thinking about the error of the inning before. So I said … ‘That’s it was, this image can be turned. ”

“So the account matched in two, although the change I could stand I threw the rival pitcher and I hit off the pitch to score the race would give us victory.”

“What God, what emotion, what a way to get up in such a game …” recalls Potolicchio, with a huge smile on his face. “With Nicholas we have a special greeting for when he gets home runs, and how often is something that we were lucky enough. But with the desire that we did this time is unprecedented “.

Fernando Petric also reflects on that time. “A side note to talk to you about the joy of homer ‘Colo’, I think it hit him with pride as the previous period had made the mistake to end the perfect game … But as Juan said the cameraman, Gerry Betz was filming the match, literally through the trees “.

A raised to the second, a strikeout and a groundout to second, at the hands of Bittor, finalized with the aspirations of Pennsylvania in the tenth inning, giving Minnesota a landmark victory that put him among the top six in this tournament.

“When the game ended, he shook hands with Juan and apologized for the mistake,” says Nicholas, “and he immediately hugged me and said, ‘What mistake? Did you get to win the game! “. That showed me once again, the great person he is. ”

Allowed no hits or Potolicchio walks in the game, striking out 20 batters rivals. Only defensive error mentioned teammate and friend Nicholas Bittor in the ninth inning, deprived him of a perfect game. The final line of the pitcher throws 10 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 20 SO. Furthermore, faced the minimum batters as the only rival who stepped on first base, was retired trying to steal second. Combining the two parties of the day, Juan Potolicchio fanned a whopping 37 batters, allowing only three hits and one run in 17 innings.

Minnesota’s next opponent would be California A’s, seeded number two in the ranking, and one of the favorites for the final fight on the last day. “The game against California was another flavor, we did not expect to beat them,” says pitcher Students in Argentina. “They had a better squad than us, two pitchers rested, and a line up far more aggressive than PA Power”.

The two starting pitchers in this game were Argentines, as Potolicchio alternated in the circle with the pampas Lucas Mata. And both were magnificent. Mata pitched seven innings, allowing two hits (both by Fernando Petric) and striking out 14 batters. For his part, “Poto” pitched the complete game, again 10 innings to claim victory (10 IP, 6 H, 2 BB, 16 SO). The defeat of Canadian World Cup Sean loaded Wither, in three innings allowing two hits and one run. Final result 1-0 for the Angels

“They of course we had more chances to score, but luckily the defense was great and the pitching of Juan impeccable. On the tenth they were able to score a career out of infield hits “tells Bittor.

“A great joy in the team when we beat A’s California, especially when we realized we were playing the last day of the tournament. An unforgettable experience “is sincere Petric.

Potolicchio recalls that “we were safe room, and waiting for a team which could win him: Saskatoon. Unfortunately the game does not argued to the magical tenth inning, and lost in seven periods, 1-0. This time we touched us, and to vary them with a home run, hit a pitch that I will stay in memory for a long time … Why did I throw that? Anyway … ”

The homer referenced the pitcher came in the fourth inning homer by Jason Hill powerful that defined the meeting to Saskatoon Diamondbacks. Juan pitched the complete game, allowing only two hits and a walk, fanning nine. In the sixth inning the Angels would tie in scoring position, singled Fernando Petric (one of two hits allowed by the staff of the D’Backs) and stole second with one out. However, Dean Holoien out of trouble with two strikeouts to end the threat of Minnesota.

Thus, the Angels finished fourth in the tournament, well above the ninth place in the ranking with which began the contest.

Bittor Nicholas states that “it was a spectacular event for us. Juan took all the credit, he threw in an incredible way. While I’m used to seeing him throw, it is difficult to do consistently excellent in all World Cup games ISC. Over innings parties and turned the ball better and faster, and it felt tired at all, even in the two sets of extra innings. ”

“I’ve already had several ISC World Tournaments, and the truth is a tournament that every player should live,” says Potolicchio. “I think that is matched only by the National Club Tournament in Argentina.”

Nicholas Bittor and Juan Potolicchio, All World 2011

His performances in this competition earned him and Nicolas Juan Potolicchio Bittor be appointed ISC All World, that is, members of the Dream Team of the tournament. For his part, Nicholas Bittor shared the second team with Mata, the first position player to be named All Argentine World. “Listen to my entire name list of players in the tournament’s second perfect team, filled me with emotion,” says Nicholas Bittor.

Juan Potolicchio ends “The truth is amazing to see the repercussions in Argentina what we did in the United States. Ahead are important commitments with Argentina, such as the International Tournament in Paraná, in the presence of world champions Australia, and Pan American champion, Venezuela and finally the Pan American Softball Championship, to be held in November in Hermosillo, Mexico, and give the tickets to the World Championship New Zealand 2013. Juan Potolicchio Nicolas Fernando Petric Bittor and seek to continue the successes, this time again with his national team.

“The fact is that without a doubt the ISC World Tournament will always be in our memories, in fact so far has been the best tournament I’ve ever had,” concludes Juan. “Although, as I said Fernando (Petric) before starting the contest, the best game of your life is always to come.”

Thank you very much Nicolas Bittor, Juan Fernando Petric and Potolicchio for your time and photos.

A special feature from our friend Martin Jorge, of Softball News LA (Latin America) “The ISC World Tournament will always be in our memories” (Google Translation) Juan Potolicchio, Nicholas and Fernando Petric Bittor this 2011 will not forget easily.
