\n\"AAU\"<\/a>The Venezolanos of Venezuela won the 15th annual AAU International men\u2019s fast pitch tournament at Orlando Florida on Sunday, January 26, 2014, riding the left arm of the 2014 AAU Most Valuable Pitcher and Most Valuable Player Eric. Urbaneja kept the powerful New York Gremlins offense off-balance with a devastating changeup, and got home run support from catcher Cesar Vasquez and shortstop Jos\u00e9 Solorzano in a three run fourth inning that proved to be decisive in Venezolanos\u2019s 4-3 win.<\/p>\n

Urbaneja pitched into prominence by leading the Venezuelan National Team to a silver medal in the ISF World Championships in New Zealand in 2012. In the 2014 AAU International Tournament, Urbaneja turned in one stellar performance after another.<\/p>\n

The New York Gremlins reached the championship game for the second time in two years, with a 9-2 semi-final over a very good New York Swashbucklers team, following a 5-2 win over the 2013 AAU and ISC World champions, the Hill United Chiefs Saturday night, in a reprise of last year\u2019s AAU International Tournament Championship Game, won by Hill United, 2-0 over Juan Potolicio. Potolicio prevailed in 2014 though, striking out 14 to get the Gremlins to Sunday.<\/p>\n

The Venezolanos turned heads early in the tournament by playing the defending champion Hill United Chiefs to a tie during pool play. (in part responsible for the Saturday matchup between Hill United and the Gremlins – a game most expected late on Sunday). <\/p>\n

Venezuela had to win two games on Sunday to get to the championship game, dispatching two other teams from Venezuela, the Lanceros, 4-2, and then Equipo de Aguilas, 6-2. Urbaneja got the wins in both, as well as the championship game.<\/p>\n

Against Venezolanos, the Gremlins started Argentine Juan Potolicio, who looked almost unhittable against the Chiefs on Saturday night, and picked up the save against the Swashbucklers Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

New York evened the score with a run in the bottom in the first inning, with shortstop Ian Fehrman driving home Brandon Horn who had reached on a fielder\u2019s choice. <\/p>\n

The game remained tied 1-1 until Venezolanos struck for three in the decisive fourth inning. Left fielder Rieando Manrique led off with a single to right field. Following a strikeout, catcher Cesar Velasquez launched a two-run homer over the left-field fence giving Venezolanos a lead they would not surrender. After another strikeout, leadoff hitter Jos\u00e9 Solorzano added what proved to be the decisive run with a home run to left-center field, and staking Urbaneja to a 4-1 lead.<\/p>\n

The Gremlins managed to get a few runners aboard in the middle innings, but couldn\u2019t cash them in against Urbanejaeja, who change speeds very effectively, enticing New York hitters into inning ending groundouts in the second, third and fourth innings. <\/p>\n

In the New York 5th, Brandon Horn reached on a single with one out. Gremlin third baseman Blair Ezekiel cut the deficit to 4-3 with a monstrous homerun to straightaway center field that cleared both the championship fence and the 305 foot fence beyond, bringing the New York bench and fans to life. Shortstop Ian Fehrman followed with a double to center, putting the tying run in scoring position, and turning up the volume level amongst a packed house.<\/p>\n

New York’s Andy Skelton was next, getting a rocket that struck Urbaneja in the face and caromed over to first baseman Cesar Cabrera who beat Skelton to the bag for the second out of the inning, while Fehrman moved over to third. <\/p>\n

The injury to Urbaneja brought the entire Venezolanos team out of the dugout and to the pitching circle to tend to their franchise player. Urbaneja had to leave the game due to the injury, with Florencio Barreto coming on in relief. With the tying run just 60 feet away, Barreto got out of the inning with a groundout to third. <\/p>\n

The Gremlins went quietly in the sixth and seventh innings,with Barreto retiring all seven batters that he faced for the save and the 2014 AAU International Tournament Championship, which was broadcast to a worldwide audience on Ballparkradio.com <\/a> <\/p>\n

Tuesday Update:<\/strong> Urbaneja was treated Sunday at a local hospital, and released, with no fracture, last seen leaving town with an armload of hardware.<\/p>\n

THIRD PLACE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Third place in the prestigious 40 team tournament went to the New York Swashbucklers of Staten Island New York, and Equipo de Aguilas of Venezuela. The New York Swashbucklers reached the final four with a win on Saturday night over former AAU champion Los Socios behind the 14 strikeout pitching of Robbie Schweyer. Equipo de Aguilas from Venezuela earned their spot in the final four with a 6-2 win over Oriundo Soy of Venezuela, behind the right arm of pitcher Tony Mancha, the latest addition to the USA national team. Mancha faced 24 batters, gave up one earned run, 2 hits, 13 Ks and didn’t walk anyone. <\/p>\n
