Opening round games. By the rankings, a couple of upsets, #19 Bar Buzz knocking off #13 Glowworm and #21 Waterdown Hammer beating #12 Ostrander Norsemen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upset of the Day<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Waterdown Hammer win over the Norsemen was the upset of the day (#21 over #12), particularly as well as the Norsemen played just a week ago at the USA Softball Men’s Major National Championship when they reeled off five consecutive wins, and finished ahead of 3 higher ranked teams. (#5 Circle Tap, #6 JB and #11 Omma Tigres). It should be noted though, that the Norsemen dropped their first game in that tournament before the win streak. Reese Yantzi was the winning pitcher for Waterdown, holding Ostrander to just 2 hits in 5 innings, striking out 6 while walking 4. USA National team pitcher Bradley Kirkpatrick took the loss, surrendering 6 runs, though only 4 earned, as the Norsemen committed 3 errors. Kirkpatrick struck out 6 while walking just 1. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top 10 Teams<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The top ranked team to play on Day 1 was the host, #5 ranked Circle Tap Dukes.<\/strong> The Dukes scored 8 runs in the first inning and never looked back, cruising to a win over the #28 ranked Alvinston Aces. Circle Tap’s  Luigar Pinto hit a 2 run homer in the first to spark the 8 run rally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#8 ranked Grand Prairie Pirates <\/strong>defeated #25 ranked Axemen. The Pirates scored runs in the first three innings, one in the first, one in the second and three in the third to put the game away early. Pirates starter Zach Pierce picked up the win, surrendering just one hit while striking out 10. Reliever Steve Normand tossed three no hit innings, striking out 7. Pierce and Normand combined for 17 strikeouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
