ICE – “In Case of Emergency”

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

This one doesn’t exactly fall under the heading of fastball, but with so many of us on the road for tournaments and such, it seemed worth mentioning.

Paramedics in some cities are encouraging people to enter “ICE” numbers into their cell phone contacts. “ICE”, as in “In Case of Emergency”. Here’s what they suggest:

By entering the acronym ICE – for In Case of Emergency – into the mobile’s phone book, users can log the name and number of someone who should be contacted in an emergency. So that paramedics can easily contact your loved ones just in case. Several different contacts should be noted ICE1, ICE2, ICE3, etc.

A good idea.

Primetime Edges Amigos for 2005 Alliance Title

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

In 2004, Edge Fastpitch, pardon the pun, edged out the Rounders for the So Cal ASA Alliance title by a single point. Hard to imagine it could be any closer in 2005, but it was.

Primetime Fastpitch (with a few players from last year’s Edge team) nosed out the Amigos for the Alliance crown on a “runs allowed” formula, after the two teams wound up in a dead heat after the seventh and final tournament of the year at Santa Fe Springs. The Amigos lost a heartbreaker, 14-13 to the Long Beach Black Sox in extra innings, which proved to be the difference.

The Long Beach Black Sox captured their third Alliance tournament title of the year in the final weekend, ahead of the Rounders, whom they beat in the title game.

The Rounders held third place for most of the season, but were excluded from tournament #6 July 10-11 by virtue of having captured an ASA “C” Nationals berth in Stockton over Memorial Day, earning zero (0) points, while everyone else moved up. Comments invited on this rule below.

Fred Hanker’s Black Sox squad was the only team to win more than one Alliance tournament during the season, falling just short of the four won by the Rounders in 2004, and five won by the Kanakas (former name for Edge), in 2003.

For more details and the final standings, visit the So Cal ASA website.

The Alliance will send at least six (6) teams to the ASA “C” Nationals in Stockton over the Labor day Weekend, September 1-5, 2005. Three of the six captured berths for the ASA “C” in qualifiers, the Rounders (Stockton in May), and Rude Pac and RAW (Santa Fe Springs), while the other three earned berths for their finish in the standings, champions Primetime, runnerup Amigos, and the third place Long Beach Black Sox.

One more door remains open to teams trying to get into the big event, a regional qualifier in Lancaster August 6-7, 2005. No word yet which teams are headed to that one.

Game Details from a Bombers game at the Walsh

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

Courtesy of Al Doran’s Fastball, and the Circle Tap team, some game details on one of the So Cal Bombers’ wins at the Walsh tournament over the weekend, a 7-4 win over #5 ranked Circle Tap, coming on the hitting of Mike Butler, and a 3 run bomb in the 7th by “GK”, Gerry Kennedy:

Circle Tap 4 SoCal Bombers 7
CT 4 9 1
SB 7 13 1
SoCal led off the bottom half of the first as Mike Butler hit a ball to the break away fence and our 2nd baseman had to run out to center to retrieve the ball allowing him to score. SoCal made it a 2-0 game in the 3rd as Albert Mendibles led off with a base hit and moved to 3rd on a pick off play gone bad. Jason Porto delivered and RBI base hit. CT would come to life in the 4th taking a 3-2 lead as LaLonde led off with a base hit, with one out Magnusson singled and with two out Todd Malnory, Kevin Reichardt and Steve Sell delivered consecutive hits with Reichardt getting gunned down at the plate for the 3rd out. SoCal would even the score on a suicide squeeze following a couple base hits. Dewey Dyck came on in relief and recored the 3rd out to end the rally. CT would reclaim the lead 4-3 in the 5th. Collin McKenzie came on in relief of Tony Peeples for SoCal. Darren Derricks earned a walk followed by a base hit by Miljavac, Magnusson would later come up with a sac fly to score a run but we left two men on again. The game would remain 4-3 CT until the bottom of the 7th. Mike Butler led off with a base hit then a strike out for the first out, however Butler moved to 2nd on a wild pitch and would score on a Glen Ormsby base hit, Jason Porto followed with a base hit and them Gerry Kennedy hit a 3 run bomb to end the game. Malnory finished 2×2, Reichardt 2×3, Sell 2×3.

The Bob Walsh Memorial Tournament has one of the toughest fields of teams in the country. This year, six of the eight teams came in with Top 10 rankings, providing stiff competition for the #18 ranked So Cal Bombers. The Bombers bolstered their roster for the weekend, adding pitcher Colin McKenzie from the Prince George Black Bears, and Gerry Kennedy from the Vancouver Grey Sox. The Bombers knocked off #5 ranked Circle Tap of Denmark Wisconsin (see above), and #7 ranked Quaker Riversharks, from Pennsylvania.

The Bombers will play locally this weekend, at the Best of the West Tournament in Winchester, CA, then travel to Altamonte Springs, Florida in two weeks for the ASA Men’s Major tournament, one of seven teams to throw their hat in for that one.

So Cal ASA Alliance Injury Report – Dan Zupp

Monday, July 25th, 2005

Most Alliance players and fans have heard about the injury to Primetime’s workhorse ace, Dan Zupp on Saturday. Doctors tell him today that it’s a mild to moderate tear of his calf muscle, with three to six weeks recovery time. (There are five and a half weeks til the ASA “C” Nationals in Stockton, if you’re doing the math). Dan reports that he’ll miss this coming weekend’s Best of the West tournament, but expects to be in Stockton for the Nationals.
