JRW & Associates of Yakima Third at Les Schwab Invite

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Yakima, WA – JRW & Associates finished third in the 1st Annual Les Schwab Invitational played at the new Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima, Washington. It was the first fastpitch tournament played at Gateway since its opening in 2005. Temporary fences were set at 265 ft and the temperature reached 108 degrees.

JRW was 2-1 in Round Robin Pool Play on Saturday. The team was in the ISC type Upper Pool with all teams going forward to SE play on Sunday. Despite losing the first game to eventual Champion, Cleon’s Auto of Tacoma, WA, JRW defeated the Boise Clippers 3-2 and CR/Adidas of Portland 11-6 to advance as the # 3 seed based on fewest runs allowed for teams tied at 2-1.

Against Cleon’s, JRW gave up 3 unearned runs in the first 2 innings. After allowing a 4th run in T4, JRW scored 3 in B4 on Catcher Casey Johnson’s 2 run homer and CF Tim Fischer’s RBI single. Starter Bryan McKitrick pitched well for the first 5 innings, allowing only one earned run. Mgr Jim Williamson elected to finish with ace Dave Drotzmann, but JRW couldn’t push across any more runs off Pitcher Tom Tungsvik.

In the second game, Dave Drotzmann and P John Clark of the Boise Clippers hooked up in an old fashioned pitcher’s duel. Drotz got the best of it with 7 K’s and 2 walks in a 3-2 victory. JRW got an unearned run in B3 and two more runs in B5 on consecutive singles by SS Tim Arndt, DP Rick Cowles, C Troy Grow (RBI) and CF Tim Fischer (RBI).

In the third game, JRW faced their 2006 nemesis, CR/Adidas of Portland. JRW Lefty Bryan McKitrick was pitching well using a variety of change-ups until one hung and CR 3B Josh Agnew crushed one for a 3 run homer. That tied the game at 5. JRW had scored 5 runs in the first two innings on a RBI single by SS Tim Arndt, a 2 RBI single by CF Tim Fischer and a 2 RBI double by LF Don Cawthron. In the next two innings, the teams swapped runs with JRW SS Tim Arndt getting another RBI single and C Troy Grow’s RBI double, his first of 5 extra base hits and 9 hits for the tournament. JRW’s 13 hits came off Rose Cup MVP Kevin Rasmussen who pitches when he is not catching the Big Boys with CR/ Portland. Dave Drotzmann entered the game in T6 and JRW put the game away in B6 with 3 runs off 1 hit and some costly CR errors for a 11-6 victory.

In the quarter-final of SE play Sunday morning, JRW beat host team and league foe Les Schwab 10-3, again getting 13 hits. These hits came off LS pitcher & Tournament Director Mark Seward. The 108-degree heat got to Mark and the game had one stoppage for Mark to get some liquids. RF Jesse Sizemore led the attack with a 2 run homer in a 7 run B3 inning. C Troy Grow had 3 doubles and 1 RBI and LF Don Cawthron broke out of his slump with a 3-5, 2 RBI effort. JRW P Dave Drotzmann struck out 6 and allowed 4 walks.

In the semi-final, the heat finally got to Dave Drotzmann. But Country Insurance of Lynden, WA’s pitcher Stan Thiessen felt the heat also. Both pitchers had thrown 11:00 AM victories in the 100-degree hit. JRW got to Stan early with 5 runs in the first four innings, mainly on 3B Jason Grow’s RBI double and RF Jesse Sizemore’s second 2 run homer on Sunday. Jesse was 2-3 with 3 RBIs. Country Pitcher Stan Thiessen’s 3 run homer and C Ryan Diephuis’s 2 run homer put Country back in the lead. Stan only allowed one run in the final three innings to outlast Drotzmann for a 9-6 victory that put Country in the Championship game.

footnote: ” Dave Drotzmann was so drained from the two back-to-back games in the 108 degree heat that he to go to the hospital on both Monday and Tuesday for IV’s”

Vancouver Challenge Sr. Men’s Fastpicth Tournament – (July 28-30)

Friday, July 28th, 2006

[Vancouver, BC]- The South Hill Sports Association has been hard at work preparing for the upcoming Vancouver Challenge. The fields and stands have been spruced up, and the inside of the clubhouse repainted. The walk-in cooler is well stocked for the beverage garden. And there are some new food items on the menu this year, including a breakfast special of blueberry pancakes along with bacon, ham or sausages, for $4.95, and a dinner special on Saturday and Sunday of a barbequed half of a chicken, corn on the cob, and potato salad for $7.95. The weather is expected to be perfect – mostly sunny and a comfortable 20-25 degrees. This year we have also been fortunate to add Canadian Springs as a sponsor to supply large bottles of water for the dugouts. There should be some great ball games and the refreshments and hospitality will be first class. We encourage all fastpitch fans in the area to come on out and support the event. First pitch goes at 6:45 p.m. on Friday night when the Vancouver Grey Sox take on local stalwarts Richmond BC Linus Software Stealers, followed by Squamish BC v. Saskatoon Diamondbacks. SoCal Bombers, Portland C/R, and Prince George Black Bears join the action on Saturday morning Games continue all day Saturday and Sunday starting at 9:00 a.m. with the final slated to go at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. David Blackburn to Unveil “ISC-TV” at 2006 ISC World Tournament

ISC to Provide Live Streaming Video of Twenty-One (21) Games from 2006 World Tournament

During the summer of 2001, I was invited by David Blackburn to come to Palmdale, California, to the Best of the West tournament, to see and try “something new” for men’s fastball — live streaming audio, broadcast over the internet. It was the dress rehearsal for a project that David had been developing for the ISC, live streaming audio broadcasts of the ISC World Tournament. I was fortunate to be able to sit in on some of those broadcasts, and see first hand, the new technology that David proposed for use in men’s fastball.

David Blackburn was named to head up the ISC’s “Streaming Media & Broadcast” program, which has become a roaring success, with tens of thousands of listeners now tuned in, via “internet radio” to listen to dozens of games from the ISC World Tournament. More than 100 games have been broadcast during the last 5 ISC World Tournaments. With David’s help, the ISC’s broadcast program was expanded to include the ISC II Tournament of Champions, under the leadership of ISC II commissioner, Blair Setford, starting in 2004. At last year’s tournaments in Eau Claire/Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, more than 50 games were carried to some 25,000 listeners worldwide. Emails came in from listeners from as far away as Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and even a ship stationed off the coast halfway around the world.

For the past two ISC World Tournaments, David has been dabbling, testing, experimenting with the use of live streaming video. The tests included a multi-camera local ABC television broadcast of the championship game at Fargo, ND in 2004, and a single camera feed from the Press Box at the 2005 tournament in Eau Claire, WI. During these early broadcasts, streaming videotechnology was still in its infancy stages. But David was not deterred. Buoyed by the early tests, David continued to work on the project in the off season, enlisting the backing of the ISC, and the technical know-how of people like Greg Panos, a technical wizard from Boeing’s space program.

The other night, David invited me to his meeting with Greg for a sneak preview of the next big leap for men’s fastball — LIVE STREAMING VIDEO, with production capability to rival a TV production truck. Thanks to improved technology, the ability to stream video has grown in leaps and bounds, not to mention portability. The gear, purchased by the ISC, includes a four (4) camera, wireless set up with a master console to control the feed being streamed on line to any of four cameras. If you ever saw the production truck on the NFL’s Monday night football with the producer pointing to which camera he wanted shown on TV, you get the idea. Only here, instead of a gigantic truck full of equipment, with miles of cables running everywhere, David can control the video feed with his mouse, sittting in front of one computer. Cables? There are none. Each of the wireless cameras is a self contained, self powered (lithium batteries) unit, which communicates with David’s computer via a wireless connection. The control panel also gives David the ability to mix in clips, logos, lettering, akin to a production you might see on ESPN. The result will be something closer to TV production quality broadcast.

The video equipment, and David’s vision for its application in the world of men’s fastball is as cutting edge as the audio equipment was back in 2001 when David invited me along to those early test broadcasts. I recall chatting with David back then, while we mused about having streaming TV “someday”. Well, that “someday” has arrived, and ISC World Tournament fans are in for a real treat this year from Kitchener.

The good news for fans, is that we’re not just talking about streaming video for the championship game. David’s crew and the ISC has gotten behind the project in a big way, and plan to televise (live streaming video) 21 games, including the championship games for both the ISC World Tournament and ISC II Tournament of Champions.

Stay tuned. Literally. The schedule is due out any day now.

Colifax – 41 Years and Counting

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Correction to earlier Morning Brief item:

After running the post below about the upcoming “Best of the West” with a headline of “Longest Running Tournament in California”, we received the following correction, which is duly noted:

In your morning brief column their is a story about the Best of The West tournament and this been its 16 th year. It also states that it is the longest running tournament in California. I must correct you on this. Although 16 years is a long time, the Labor Tournament in Colfax California will enter its 41st year this August 18, 19 and 20th. It has moved from a week long tournament down to 3 days but nonetheless, it has not missed an August weekend in 41 years.

We stand corrected. 41 years is nothing to sneeze at ! Best of the West remains the longest running open tournament, but Colifax’s B/C event has set a record that appears to be out of reach, especially, as it continues each year 🙂

P.S. for all of the Men’s “B” fastpitch players and teams that have been visiting the Fastpitch West Forum, check out the conversation going on about a challenge! I think the Larry Standley Softball Field would be a perfect place to host the Men’s “B” Fastpitch North vs. South challenge….what do you think?

16 Years and Counting

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

The image above is from an old T-shirt from the 2nd Best of the West in 1992, in the days when the “Bombers” were from Vista 😉 Recognize any of those other teams?

The tournament was started by Al Ruegsegger and originally played at Joe Rodgers Field in Long Beach, and now enters its 16th year in a row, the longest running tournament in California. For many years now, the tournament has been headed up for years by the ISC’s streaming media maven, David Blackburn. It’s been played at Palmdate, Soboba, Winchester, and this year will be in beautiful Santa Barbara, this coming weekend, July 29-30, 2006.

The ballpark is a few blocks from the ocean. Something tells me that the ocean breezes will be appreciated by the players who have been suffering triple digit temps of late. Want to go to the tournament but don’t feel like driving? Catch Amtrak. . Union Station in downtown LA is an easy drive on the weekend, and you can enjoy a cold one enroute, and snooze on the way home. The Sunday morning trains will get you there in time for the semis and finals. The train station is just .7 of a mile from the fields. .Click here to see the ballpark. .

DRIVING DIRECTIONS

Coming South on Hwy 101, from Northern California, exit at Castillo. Go right on Castillo two blocks. The two fields at Pershing Park are on the right.

Coming North on Hwy 101, from Southern California, exit at the Garden Street off ramp. Go left to Cabrillo. Go right on Cabrillo about a half mile. At Castillo, go right, about 1 block, and the two fields at Pershing Park are on the left.

Editor’s note: Speaking of David Blackburn, watch the Morning Brief this week for some exciting news about Dave’s latest project for this year’s ISC World Tournament. We got a sneak preview last night and can’t wait to see it put into play. You’re going to like this one……
