Tech Time at FPW

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

Some tech developments that might be of interest to all fastpitch players, coaches and fans as the 2007 season gets into swing:

GOOGLE 411800-GOOG-411 (800-466-4411) – a FREE telelephone 411 (yellow pages) service from Google. It will connect you, give you details, or even text you if you say “text me”. Having trouble finding that hotel or restaurant while on a road trip? Let Google 411 connect you for free. Did I mention it’s FREE?>.

GOOGLE APPS – while they are not new, they have added some new ones and some bells and whistles on the others. Best of all, they are FREE.

Need to open that tournament bracket that’s in excel, but don’t have excel on your computer? Try Google Spreadsheets.

Ditto a Word doc – Use Google Docs to open it.

MAPS – Is there a better map app than Google’s? Tell me you haven’t burned company time using the “satellite photo” mode to find cities or ballparks you’re headed to, or trying to see what your house looked like the day they took the pic 😉 Use Google Maps to “find businesses” (e.g. hotels, etc.) the next time your team hits the road.

RSS READER OR GOOGLE HOMEPAGE
– add the feeds for Al’s Fastball, ISCfastpitch, Morning Brief and the Deuce to your Google home page, or to their RSS Reader. RSS (news feeds) have never been easier.

And if you’re using Firefox browser, download the free Google Firefox Toolbar and you can highlight an address on screen, and it will automatically open a google map.

JOTT – Free voice to email service. www.jott.com. Great for those times when you can’t get to a computer, but have to get a quick email out to someone. For the low, low price of FREE.

ONLINE AIRLINE TIX – Getting ready to plunk down that hard earned cash for airline tickets? Be sure to check here:

David Halberstam (1934-2007)

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

On occasion, we write here about topics and people outside the realm of men’s fastpitch. Today is one of those days. We report the passing of a great journalist, who had a particular knack for capturing the essence of sport, David Halberstam. He died, tragically, in a car crash in Northern California yesterday, but died doing the thing he loved – writing about sports. He was on his way to meet legendary quarterback, Y.A. Title, to write of the great 1958 NFL title game. Regretably, that is a story we will never hear from him.

His legacy includes some of the best baseball books ever written, including “Summer of ’49”, “October 1964“, and “Teammates”, a poignant look back at Ted Williams and some of his teammates from the 1940’s, who cemented lifelong friendships during their playing days — some thing I am sure that everyone who plays or has played men’s fastpitch can relate to.

Halberstam had a particular affinity for the game of baseball, capturing the story of the game, but always in the context of daily life. He had a wonderful way of portraying the human side of the people he wrote about, and helping place the reader in the particular era of which he wrote. For those who wish to “visit” another era, “Summer of ’49” offers such an opportunity, a thoroughly enjoyable time capsule of the Yankee-Red Sox pennant race of 1949, not unlike the story that might be written by a great author who spent a summer following the top fastpitch teams doing battle enroute to the ISC World Tournament. His books left you with the feeling that you had been in the dugout, at the field, and along for the ride.

Halberstam will be missed, but his books live on.
