Championship Game: Genesis 8, El Segundo Rounders 2

Chris Minogue hit a two-run home to ignite a 15 hit attack by Genesis that saw them score in five of the seven frames. Click menu button at left for Box Score from Championship game.

Genesis First: Wayne Buckels led off the game with an infield single and scored on a 2 run-homer by Chris Minogue. Two runs, three hits. Genesis 2, Rounders 0
Rounders Second: Donald Jewett tripled to right field and scored on a ground out ball hit by shortstop Danny Roberts. Two hits, one run. Genesis 2, Rounders 1
Genesis Third: Chris Minogue reached second on error at third, was sacrificed to third by Dan Plesetz, 2-4, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Matt Shaw. One hit, one run. Genesis 3, Rounders 1
Rounders Third: Erik Geierman doubled to left. With two outs, Tom Morton doubled to left, scoring Geierman. Two hits, one run. Genesis 3, Rounders 2.
Genesis Fourth: Nick Muratalla singled to left; Bobby Cole singled to short; Wayne Buckels singled to right. With the bases loaded, Muratella scored on a ground out by Ken Shaw. Dan Plesetz brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to center. Matt Shaw then singled to center, but Bockels was cut down at the plate on a strong throw by Tom Morton to Rounder's catcher Mike Hemperly. Four hits, two runs. Genesis 5, Rounders 2.
Genesis Fifth: Bobby Gonzales doubled to center; Steve Fenton reached on a fielder's choice as Rounders catcher Mike Hemperly threw out Gonzalez at third for the first out. Nick Muratalla then doubled home Fenton for a run. When Bobby Cole walked, Donald Jewett came on in relief of Billy Zylstra. Muratalla was erased at the plate, pitcher to catcher on a fielder's choice come-back hit by Ken Shaw. Two hits, two runs. Genesis 7, Rounders 2.
Genesis Sixth: Chris Minogue led off the inning with a single to left. Plesetz flied to left for the first out. Matt Shaw then singled to right wtih Minogue advancing to second. A singled to shallow center field by Bob Gonzalez loaded the bases, Minogue remaining at third with Tom Morton making the throw back into the infield. A walk to Bobby Cole forced in the 8th and final run for Genesis. Genesis 8, Rounders 2.
Final Score: Genesis 8, Rounders 2
Genesis reached the finals with a 4-3 win over San Diego Fastpitch in the semi-finals, with pitcher Wayne Geisler picking up the win. Geisler went 6 and 2/3 with Joe Salcido getting the final out. Genesis scored four runs early, but San Diego chipped away and cut the lead to the final 4-3 score.
Meanwhile the Rounders' semi-final game with the Amigos was nearly as close, with the Rounders coming out on top, 4-2.
Genesis and the Rounders both won berths to the ASA "C" Nationals in College Station, TX.
Runner-up Game: El Segundo Rounders 11, L.A. Kanakas 1
WP- Mitch Mendenhall; LP - Gary Schwenn. HR-Morton (R); Tollington (R) The Rounders bounced back in the final game of the day, for second place, and the second berth to the ASA "C" Nationals. The Rounders-Kanakas game resembled the Genesis-Rounders game, with a first inning home run providing an early lead to the eventual winner. This time, though, it was the Rounders scoring first, on a first inning 3-run home run by Rounders' centerfielder Tom Morton. The Rounders' offense sent 11 men to the plate in the first inning, tallied five runs in the first, and the Kanakas never recovered. Scoring recap:
Rounders First: Eric Geierman singled to center. Paul Castillo reached on a bunt single; Tom Morton homered to deep center field, three runs scoring. After Jewett grounded out to short, Danny Roberts hit a flair double to right. Mike Hemperly and John Wilson walked to load the bases. Rounder's right fielder Steve Tollington then singled to center, two runs scoring. Five hits, five runs. Rounders 5, Kanakas 0.
Kanakas First: Jimmy Buentello singled to left, and scored on a double to center by Rick McCarthy. Two hits, one run. Rounders 5, Kanakas 1.
Rounders Second: With one out, Donald Jewett singled to right. Shortstop Danny Roberts singled to right, with Jewett advancing to third. On the throw from right field to third, the ball went wide of the bag, Jewett came home to score, and Roberts advanced to third. Mike Hemperly drove Roberts home on a clean line drive single to centerfield. Three hits, two runs. Rounders 7, Kanakas 1.
Rounders Third: Steve Tollington walked to lead off the inning. Eric Geierman singled to right with Tollington advancing to second. Tollington advanced to third on a ground out that erased Geierman at second. An illegal pitch was called when Kanakas first baseman Keith Barker stepped outside the playing field. One hit, one run. Rounders 8, Kanakas 1.
Rounders Sixth: Paul Castillo led off the inning with a single to left, advanced to second on an overthrow, and moved over to third on a fly out to center. Castillo scored on a Sac Fly to right field by Donald Jewett. One hit, one run. Rounders 9, Kanakas 1
Rounders Seventh: With two out, Steve Tollington hit a solo homer to left field. Kanakas left fielder Lou Sanchez chased the homer to the fence, but wound up crashing through the fence as to the ball left the yard. One of the base umpires initially signaled for a ground rule double, but the other umpires overruled him , determining that both the ball landed beyond the fence. One hit, one run. Rounders 11, Kanakas 1.
Final score: Rounders 11, Kanakas 1
