Game 1
R H E
Victoria Traveller's Inn 001 002 3 - 6 8 1
Victoria Northwest Caskets 200 000 0 - 2 2 2
Collin McKenzie & Tyler Werbowski.
John Bishop & Rob Wormald.
Umpires: P - Rico Powers, 1B - John Ribalkin, 3B - Bud Livingstone.
Time: 2:17 (6:37-8:54 P.M.)
Traveller's Inn got a scare from Victoria's Northwest Caskets in the
opener
of the tournament. Caskets took the lead early and John Bishop stymied
Traveller's Inn hitters until the late innings.
Northwest Caskets took the lead in the bottom of the 1st inning. RF
Pat
Burley struck out and reached on a wild pitch, CF Eli Michielin
walked, then
2B Gary Hermsen reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Gary
Gardner's
grounder drove in one run, and Michielin also scored when the double
play
relay was errant at first base. McKenzie managed to get a lineout and
a
strikeout to put down the threat, and Caskets then only had three base
runners the rest of the way, none of whom went past first base.
Traveller's Inn got one run back in the top of the 3rd inning as 3B
Glenn
Ormsby drew a one-out walk, stole second base, then eventually scored
on an
infield throwing error.
Bishop really had his dipper working until the top of the 6th inning,
when
with one out, he walked two batters. A pinch-hit single by Jeff
Hurford
(seeing limited duty all weekend due to a strained hamstring) tied the
game,
then Craig Crawford raced home on a passed ball to put Traveller's Inn
ahead
3-2.
Traveller's Inn finally got some breathing room in the top of the 7th
inning. Ormsby and 1B Kevin Bobroske led off with singles, then DP
Gerry
Kennedy blasted a long fly down the right field line. The ball landed
right
at the base of the fence and was controversially ruled fair, scoring
both
runners. Kennedy ended up with a double, and later scored from there
on a
wild pitch.
McKenzie earned the win by tossing a 2-hitter (both hits by Hermsen),
striking out 14, walking three, and giving up just one earned run.
Bishop
took the tough loss, allowing eight hits, striking out eight, but
walking
seven batters, and he was charged with four earned runs. |
Game 2
R H E
Vancouver Grey Sox 000 000 0 - 0 3 1
Traveller's Inn 401 000 x - 5 8 1
Nick Underhill(L), Joe Robbins(4) & Kris Waverick.
Korrey Gareau & Craig Crawford.
Home Runs: T.I.: Kevin Bobroske, Gerry Kennedy.
Umpires: P - John Ribalkin, 1B - Bud Livingstone, 3B - Scott McLaren.
Time: 1:42 (9:19-11:01 P.M.).
This game featured two starting pitchers who had not seen much action
yet
this year, and it was Traveller's Inn who capitalized on that.
Nick Underhill, recovering from a broken collarbone which delayed the
start
of his season, was touched for four runs by Traveller's Inn in the
bottom of
the 1st inning. CF Zenon Winters stroked a 1-out double, 3B Glenn
Ormsby
followed with an RBI single, then DP Kevin Bobroske blasted a 2-run
home run
to right-centre field. With two out, SS Marty Steen was hit by a
pitch,
moved up on a wild pitch, and then scored from second base on an
errant
infield throw.
Gerry Kennedy added a solo home run in the bottom of the 3rd inning,
also
off Underhill.
Gareau went the distance, although it was clear he was also not in top
form. However, he limited the Grey Sox to just three hits, struck out
10,
and walked just three in tossing the shutout. Underhill lasted three
innings, giving up four hits and as many earned runs before Joe
Robbins
finished up. |

Game 3
R H E
Portland DeMarini 000 200 0 - 2 7 2
Northwest Caskets 001 000 2 - 3 1 1
Roberto Bahler & Kevin Rasmussen.
Gord Mainwaring & Rob Wormald.
Home Run: NWC: Craig Bryden.
Umpires: P - Bud Livingstone, 1B - Dan Walushka, 3B - Rico Powers.
Time: 1:40 (9:03-10:43 A.M.).
This early morning game turned out to be one of the best and most
interesting games of the tourney - a pitcher threw a 1-hitter and
lost, and
a team scored two runs in an inning without a hit!
Roberto Bahler was stingy for Portland - the only hit he allowed was a
2-out solo home run by CF Craig Bryden in the bottom of the 3rd inning
that
put Caskets ahead 1-0.
Portland came right back in the top of the 4th inning to take the lead
2-1.
With one out, a dropped fly ball in left field resulted in a two-base
error,
then consecutive singles by 3B Marc Santillano and 2B Santiago Lataire
scored one run, and a sacrifice fly by RF Larry Ybarra scored the
second
run.
Bahler was then in control until the bottom of the 7th inning. He
issued a
leadoff walk to 3B Kevin Falconer, then hit some tough luck. C Rob
Wormald
bunted and the throw to second base was late, putting two runners on.
1B
Colin McMillan then bunted and the throw to third base was late - when
the
return throw across the diamond to get McMillan was wild, Falconer
raced
home to tie the game, and Caskets were left with runners at the
corners with
still nobody out! Bahler issued another walk to load the bases, then
struck
out Bryden before walking RF Dan Lee to force Wormald home with the
winning
run.
Bahler did toss the 1-hitter, striking out eight batters, but his
undoing
proved to be the five walks he issued. Mainwaring was steady for
Caskets,
spacing seven hits and striking out six, while walking just one
batter. As
well, both runs against him were unearned.

Game 4
R H E
Grey Sox 332 31 - 12 13 1
Olympia Morgan Transfer 003 00 - 3 8 2
Joe Robbins & Kris Waverick.
Bricklen Anderson(L), Sam Aldridge(3) & Dennis Ewart.
Home Runs: G.S: Kris Waverick, Eugenio Payano.
Oly.: Trevor Knight.
Time: 1:35 (11:05 A.M.-12:40 P.M.).
The Grey Sox bats came alive in this game as they thumped Olympia 12-3
in
just five innings. RF Tim Crome led the way, leading off the game with
a
single and scoring the first run. He ended up 3-4 with three runs
scored
and one RBI. C Kris Waverick went 2-3 with three RBI's, including a
2-run
home run. Eugenio Payano also homered for the Grey Sox - he went 3-3
with
two runs scored and two RBI's. Joe Robbins cruised to the easy win in
the
circle, scattering eight hits and striking out four batters. SS Trevor
Knight had the only highlight for Olympia, as he belted a 2-run home
run in
the bottom of the 3rd inning. |
Game 5
R H E
Portland 110 000 0 - 2 5 5
Grey Sox 012 200 x - 5 6 3
Kevin Careless & Kevin Rasmussen.
Nick Underhill & Kris Waverick.
Home Run: G.S.: Derek Mayson.
Time: 1:50 ( 1:02-2:52 P.M.).
The Grey Sox got a better showing from Nick Underhill this time out
and
took their second victory of the day in a sloppy game, while Portland
lost
their second game of the day.
Portland took the lead in the top of the 1st inning with an unearned
run as
CF Rob Broberg reached on an infield error, then scored on SS Brian
Ree's
triple. In the top of the 2nd inning Portland went ahead 2-0 on
another
unearned run courtesy of two Grey Sox errors.
The Grey Sox started their comeback in the bottom of the 2nd inning
with an
unearned run of their own, then took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd
inning as RF Tim Crome and 2B Trevor Johnstone both singled and
scored. In
the bottom of the 4th inning, after a 2-out infield error kept the
inning
alive, 1B Derek Mayson belted a 2-run home run to cap the scoring.
Underhill earned the win by going the distance, giving up five hits,
walking two, striking out 10, and not allowing an earned run. Careless
took
a tough loss, only being charged for one earned run. He gave up six
hits,
walked two and struck out seven. |
Game 6
R H E
Olympia 221 11 - 7 7 0
Northwest Caskets 000 00 - 0 3 1
Bricklen Anderson & Dennis Ewart.
John Bishop & Rob Wormald.
Home Runs: Oly.: Dennis Ewart, Mark Brown.
Umpires: P - Rico Powers, 1B - Bud Livingstone, 3B - Scott McLaren.
Time: 1:31 (3:10-4:41 P.M.).
Olympia bounced back from their earlier drubbing to hand Northwest
Caskets
a 7-0 5-inning whitewash.
SS Trevor Knight, who had a 2-run single in the top of the 1st inning,
C
Dennis Ewart, who blasted a solo home run in the top of the 2nd
inning, and
RF Mark Brown, who followed suit with a solo home run of his own in
the top
of the 3rd inning, keyed Olympia's offence. Hurler Bricklen Anderson
was
much sharper this game than earlier, allowing just three hits, while
walking
two and striking out seven batters.
|
Game 7
R H E
Olympia 000 00 - 0 0 2
Traveller's Inn 127 2x - 12 14 0
Sam Aldridge(L), Sisko Sabate(4) & Dennis Ewart.
Collin McKenzie & Craig Crawford.
Home Runs: T.I.: Marty Steen, Dan Whiteford.
Umpires: P - John Ribalkin, 1B - Scott McLaren, 3B - Dan Walushka.
Time: 1:04 (5:03-6:07 P.M.).
Collin McKenzie threw a perfect game and Traveller's Inn clinched
first
place in the round robin and a bye to Sunday's final with a big 12-0
win.
McKenzie retired all 15 batters he faced, striking out 11 in all,
including
eight of the last nine, and the last six batters of the game.
At the plate, SS Marty Steen belted a grand slam home run in the
bottom of
the 3rd inning, and 2B Dan Whiteford added a 2-run shot in the bottom
of the
4th inning. Six Traveller's Inn players each had two hits, and five of
those players each scored two runs.

Game 8
R H E
Portland 000 020 1 - 3 8 1
Traveller's Inn 000 020 0 - 2 7 0
Mark Bennett, Roberto Bahler(W)(5), Kevin Careless(7) & Kevin
Rasmussen.
Korrey Gareau, Collin McKenzie(L)(7) & Craig Crawford.
Home Runs: Port.: Marc Santillano.
T.I.: Harvey Stevenson.
Umpires: P - Bud Livingstone, 1B - Dan Walushka, 3B - Rico Powers.
Time: 2:01 (7:01-9:02 P.M.).
Portland needed a win to stay alive in the tourney and pulled off the
upset
to do so.
In an excellent pitcher's duel, Portland's Mark Bennett and
Traveller's Inn
Korrey Gareau matched up to keep the game scoreless through four
innings,
before each was touched in the 5th inning. Both teams had chances -
Portland stranded five runners in the first four innings, while
Traveller's
Inn left six runners on also. Bennett induced some big groundouts to
work
out of trouble, while Gareau came up with some big strikeouts to
escape
jams.
In the top of the 5th inning, after #2 man in the line-up SS Brian Ree
singled, 3B Marc Santillano hammered a 2-run home run over the left
field
fence to put Portland ahead. Traveller's Inn answered right back in
the
bottom of the 5th inning as their #2 man singled, then RF Harvey
Stevenson
tied the game with his own home run to left field.
The game stayed tied until the top of the 7th inning, when Ree led off
with
a triple to right-centre field. Collin McKenzie came on in relief of
Gareau, and Santillano managed to muscle one of his pitches just
beyond
second base, scoring Ree with the 3-2 run. McKenzie then struck out
the
side to avoid any more damage.
In the bottom of the 7th inning, Traveller's Inn put two runners on
with
just one out. Kevin Careless came on to relieve Roberto Bahler, who
had
pitched two strong innings in relief of Bennett. Careless got a
three-pitch
strikeout, then SS Marty Steen lined a hot smash down the first base
line
which looked like it could go for extra bases and possibly win the
game.
However, 1B Bobby Jones made an outstanding grab on a short hop and
easily
beat Steen to the bag to end the game |
Game 9
R H E
Northwest Caskets 101 00 - 2 6 2
Grey Sox 025 03 - 10 10 0
Gord Mainwaring & Rob Wormald.
Joe Robbins & Sean Cameron.
Home Runs: NWC: Gary Hermsen.
G.S.: Doug Allin.
Time: 1:19 (9:13-10:32 P.M.).
The Grey Sox bats stayed hot and they clinched second place and a spot
in
Sunday's semi-final with a big win over Northwest Caskets, who were
eliminated with this loss.
The Grey Sox scored five runs on six hits while sending 10 batters to
the
plate in the bottom of the 3rd inning. LF Doug Allin led the offence
for
the Grey Sox with two hits, including a 3-run home run in the 4th
inning.
Three other Grey Sox players each had two hits, and four Grey Sox
scored two
runs each. Joe Robbins cruised to another easy win, scattering six
hits and
striking out seven. |

Game 10
R H E
Olympia 200 000 0 - 2 5 0
Portland 000 000 0 - 0 2 0
Bricklen Anderson & Dennis Ewart.
Roberto Bahler & Kevin Rasmussen.
Umpires: P - John Ribalkin, 1B - Rico Powers, 3B - Bud Livingstone.
Time: 1:42 (9:02-10:44 A.M.).
The last game of the round robin was an important one, as the winner
would
advance to the semi-final, while the loser would be eliminated.
Olympia got
off to a fast start, Portland was a little flat, and Bricklen Anderson
pitched a fine game as Olympia moved on with a 2-0 win.
All the offence Anderson needed came before he took to the circle. In
the
top of the 1st inning, 2B Kasey Knight drilled a 1-out single. SS
Trevor
Knight followed with another single to put runners at the corners. LF
Dave
Carlton tapped one towards third base, and he was safe at first after
the
runner at third had to be checked back. Playing coach and DP Johnnie
Davis
then punched a single to short centre field, scoring both of the
Knights and
staking Olympia to a 2-0 lead.
Anderson made that stand up by firing a strong 2-hitter. He struck out
10
batters, walked three, and stranded five Portland runners.

Game 11 -
Semi-Final
R H E
Olympia 000 00 - 0 0 0
Grey Sox 430 0x - 7 10 1
Sisko Sabate & Dennis Ewart.
Nick Underhill(W), Joe Robbins(5) & Kris Waverick.
Home Runs: G.S.: Tim Crome, Kevin Schellenberg.
Time: 1:01 (11:05 A.M.-12:06 P.M.).
The Grey Sox bats continued to pound, and Nick Underhill continued to
get
stronger with each game, as the Grey Sox advanced to the final with an
easy
7-0 win over Olympia.
Underhill combined with Joe Robbins to no-hit Olympia in this game.
Underhill threw the first four innings, striking out eight, while
Robbins
threw a 1-2-3 5th inning, including two strikeouts. At the plate, RF
Tim
Crome set the tone early, leading off the bottom of the 1st inning
with a
home run. SS Kevin Schellenberg added a 2-run home run later in the
1st
inning, then delivered a 2-run single in the bottom of the 2nd inning.

Game 12 -
Final
R H E
Grey Sox 004 001 0 - 5 10 1
Traveller's Inn 030 000 0 - 3 10 0
Nick Underhill & Kris Waverick.
Collin McKenzie & Craig Crawford.
Home Runs: G.S.: Tim Crome, Kris Waverick, Pat McCarron.
Umpires: P - Rico Powers, 1B - Bud Livingstone, 3B - Dan Walushka.
Time: 1:58 (1:00-2:58 P.M.).
The Vancouver Grey Sox were full marks in claiming the title in the
final
game of the tournament. After an opening loss, they completed a run of
five
straight victories with a well-deserved 5-3 win over Traveller's Inn.
Nick Underhill started again for the Grey Sox, and although he
admittedly
did not have his best stuff, he managed to keep Traveller's Inn strong
line-up at bay most of the game. Underhill went the distance, allowing
10
hits while striking out six, but he walked just three, was charged for
just
two earned runs, and stranded 10 Traveller's Inn base runners.
Collin McKenzie threw a complete game for Traveller's Inn, but he fell
victim to three long balls. McKenzie also allowed 10 hits, while
striking
out 12 and walking two batters. All five Vancouver runs were earned.
Traveller's Inn took the first lead in the game. In the bottom of the
2nd
inning, SS Marty Steen and 3B Doug Cain led off with back-to-back
singles.
2B Dan Whiteford put a bunt down on the third base side, and when 3B
Pat
McCarron's throw sailed down the right field line, both Steen and Cain
scored and Whiteford ended up on second base. Another single, followed
by a
sacrifice fly by C Craig Crawford, brought Whiteford around with the
third
run of the inning.
The Grey Sox bounced right back. McCarron led off the top of the 3rd
inning with a double. After a fly-out, leadoff hitter RF Tim Crome
belted a
2-run home run to left-centre field. 2B Trevor Johnstone singled,
then,
after a strikeout for the second out, C Kris Waverick drilled another
2-run
home run to right-centre field, putting the Grey Sox ahead 4-3, and
giving
Underhill a lead he would not relinquish.
McCarron added a solo home run to left field in the top of the 6th
inning
to give the Grey Sox a little breathing room.
Traveller's Inn had their best chance to tie in the bottom of the 7th
inning. 1B Kevin Bobroske led off with a single, and when Garry
Kennedy
followed with another single, Traveller's Inn had runners at the
corners
with nobody out. Underhill got a key strikeout, then Cain lined a low,
hot
smash back through the circle. However, Underhill made a nifty grab,
then
tossed over to first base to easily complete the game-ending double
play.
There were three awards for the tourney. The top batter and top
pitcher
were based only on the round robin results, while the MVP was based on
the
overall tournament.
The top batter was Eugenio Payano of the Grey Sox, who went five for
seven
for a .714 average (he also walked three times). The top pitcher was
Collin
McKenzie of Traveller's Inn, who posted two wins, including a perfect
game,
had a 0.58 ERA, and struck out 25 batters in just 12 innings pitched.
The Grey Sox Nick Underhill and Tim Crome were named co-MVP's for the
tourney, as both players had a significant impact for their team and
were
both deserving of the award. Underhill ended up with three wins and
one
loss, threw the complete-game win in the final, posted a 2.00 ERA, and
struck out 28 batters in 21 innings pitched. Crome finished the
tournament
going 10 for 18, a .556 average, with two home runs (including one in
the
final), four RBI's and seven runs scored.
