Cobourg Murphy’s Windmillers joined the exclusive Peterborough Men’s Softball Association city league championship club for the first time with a 4-1 win over Better Floorz at East City Bowl Thursday.
Cobourg won the best-of-seven series in four straight games in its inaugural season in the league, although all the encounters were close. Last night’s decision was the greatest margin of victory with the first three games all 4-3 verdicts.
It was the first city league title for a Cobourg squad since the Cobourg Merchants took it in 1957.
That the Windmillers were even playing, let alone standing in the infield holding the trophy, was amazing in itself as they didn’t have a league to play in at the start of the season.
After their Cobourg league folded, they were suddenly without a place to play and they were invited by city league officials to join the Peterborough loop.
“We are all pretty excited,” said Cobourg centrefielder Jason Kane, 31, who contributed a couple of hits in the last game. “It was really special, especially with the way the season began and that they allowed us into the league. We were really pleased with that. The competition was good in the league and we played well as a team. Our core group has been together about eight years. Every game was close and we just got timely hits, played good defence and got good pitching. We have a good group of guys and who just want to play ball.” Click here to continue reading.
