After a quiet weekend May 30-31, this will be a busy one, especially out west. Two of California’s longest running tournaments are both on tap for this coming weekend. Clyde Bennett will be running the 23rd Annual Best of the West Tournament, which includes a team of 19U New Zealanders as part of their tour.
The tournament will be played at Elings Park, with a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean, and in the shadow of the Dave Blackburn Memorial Tree, which was planted and dedicated in honor of Dave, who ran the tournament for thirteen years, and is best known for his pioneering work in bringing streaming audio and video broadcasts to Men’s Fastball. Dave passed away just one year ago.
Meanwhile, the Cal Classic will be played up north this year, in Sonora, after a five year run in Southern California, at the Sportsplex facilities in the San Diego area. A number of problems led to the move, including an uncooperative staff not conducive to top flite men’s fastball. The Cal A’s will again host the tournament, with the WCFA’s Bob Chapel on hand to keep things running smoothly.
