Team Canada’s Ian Fehrman is retiring with gold.
The 35-year-old softball player grew up playing ball in Jarvis and Hagersville — a shortstop all his life — and capped it all off when Canada beat Venezuela 2-1 in the gold medal final.
“It as an exciting game, pretty much a draw right until the sixth inning it was nothing-nothing,” said Fehrman.
Then, Canada took the lead it would never relinquish on a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.
“We kind of tried to make things interesting in the seventh,” he said. “They got a run … but then our pitcher shut the door.”
His team also won the world championships in Saskatoon a couple weeks ago.
“It’s been a pretty cool last month, that’s for sure, winning the ISF and coming right to the Pan Am’s and getting gold there.”
But playing in Ajax, an hour away from the athletes’ village, the team had to wait to celebrate.
After a couple medal ceremonies, getting back to the athletes’ village around 11 p.m., the team was finally able to have a couple drinks for a proper celebration.
“I had no idea what to expect coming into it … everything was first class, 24/7 food and you were catered to, whatever you needed,” he said. “It’s something hopefully every athlete will experience at least once.”
