From the San Diego Independent FastPitch League
Week 2 –
Friday Night July 24th Recap:
Friday marked the debut of Escondido High School Head Softball Coach, San Diego Legend and All World Fast pitch Softball Pitcher Cary Weiler at the Poway Sportsplex. Making his debut for the SD Fury Fast pitch club, who were facing the Rukos FPC to open the season, Cary was excited and jubilant to contribute to the revival of our beloved sport.
SD Fury’s night began in typical Cary fashion with Cary striking out the 1st batter he faced in his debut, but they then fell behind early after some costly errors by the young Fury ball club. Fury found themselves down 3-0 after the 1st and after 2 more runs in the 2nd were trailing 5-0. But in the bottom of the 2nd Fury began chipping away at the lead. After a booming triple to deep left center field for an RBI by Val Cervantes and a pass ball to plate Val, Fury found themselves down 5-2 going into the 3rd inning.
After blanking the Rukos FPC in the innings to follow, heading into the bottom of the 5th, the young Fury ball club erupted for 5 runs to take a 7-5 lead. Beginning with a single from newcomer Andy Barrios to start the inning and following a walk to lead off man Jesse Morales, birthday boy Jon Cervantes found himself with an opportunity to celebrate in style with runners on. Following a pass ball to move the runners up 60 feet, Jon came through with a scorching single to left to plate the 2 runs and get Fury to within 1 run of the lead.
After a double by clean up man and first baseman Javier Alvarez, Cary stepped up to the plate with runners on 2nd and 3rd and an opportunity to help himself to get his first lead in the game and on the young season. Cary did not disappoint. With a ringing single to right field following his signature grunt at contact, the Fury ball club moved ahead 6-5 and later plated Cary on a double by Short Stop Victor Macias, putting a cap on the 5 run inning.
But the lead was short lived. Opening up the top of the 6th the Rukos FPC struck back with 3 runs of their own to recapture the lead, hush the stunned crowd, and attempt to close out the game with an 8-7 lead.
But the young Fury club would not be denied on this night. Opening up the bottom of the 6th again was the newcomer Andy Barrios. He got on board with a walk and was followed by a single from leadoff man Jesse Morales. With runners on the corners newcomer veteran Jose Gonzales walked to load the bases. Immediately after, the Umpire signaled that the time of the game had ran out, and we would be finishing the inning. The young Fury club then looked to their young third baseman with the bases loaded and another opportunity to celebrate his birthday. This time however, in walk off style.
Jon Cervantes stepped to the plate and jumped on the 1st pitch he saw from relief pitcher Jose Lopez, and drove a single to right to plate the tying and go ahead runs to seal the victory for Cary and the young Fury ball club. Jon was quoted saying
“That was a great way to celebrate my birthday… I’ll take 2-3 and 4 RBI’s. Best of all, I helped us get a win!”
