Roseville Eagles go 4-0 to wrap up championship in Salem.
In Saturday’s first game of the tournament, Roseville had to dispatch of a tough Cleon’s Auto team from Seattle. Nate Dondero picked up his first win of the tournament in a tough 2-1 game. Roseville struck first in the bottom half of the first inning. Jabari Wimbs was hit to leadoff the game, folowed by a walk to Aaron Glaum, and a sac bunt from Mario Pereira, Joel Manfredi would hit a sac fly to plate Wimbs to tally the first score of the game. Runs would be tough against Cleon’s Ryan Banner, as the Eagles didnt record their first hit until the 5th inning when Russ Newnan lined a ball up the middle. Cleon’s would tie the game in the 5th at 1 apiece. In the bottom half of the 6th, Kevin Fontana lead off with a leadoff double down the line, and would score on a line drive from Larry Machado off the glove of the 2nd baseman into right field. Dondero held steady in the top of the 7th to pick up the 2-1 win.
The second game saw the Eagles face another tough K-Club squad from Seattle. Ed Gasper would pick up his first win of the tournament in an 8-5 battle. Keith Fry would come in and get some tough outs in the 6th and 7th inning, with Dondero striking out the final batter to preserve the lead.
Sunday was a match up of the two undefeated teams, Roseville and the Boise River Dogs. Roseville saw Nate Dondero throw a no hitter with 12 strikeouts in a 5 inning 7-0 final. Kary Moore would set an ASA record as the oldest player to steal a base in the win.
Boise would come back to make the championship game again, as Roseville would prevail 7-1 with Gasper picking up the win in the championship. Mark Summers, playing in his last ASA tournament of his career, had 2 hits, and a diving catch in right field late in the game. Aaron Glaum got things started in the first inning with a 2 run homerun, as the Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first.
All tourney honors would go to Jabari Wimbs, Larry Machado, Joel Manfredi, Mario Pereira, Eddie Gasper, with Nate Dondero winning the tournament MVP honors.
