The Day 3 winner’s bracket contest between the BC A’s and the NE Drillers figured to be a close one, pitting two evenly matched squads. Close proved to be an understatement, with the two teams taking 14 innings to decide the winner, with the BC A’s coming away the winner on a walk-off two run home run by Greg Garrity, for a 4-2 final.
A’s starter, Venezuelan Ramon Jones went 10 innings, surrendering only four hits while striking out 14, getting relief help for the final four innings from Argentine Lucas Mata, who gave up but one hit.
Huemul Mata drove in the two runs scored by the Drillers, with a two run homer in the 6th to tie the score and push the contest into extra innings. Juan Cruz Zara of the Drillers scored on the Mata home run.
The A’s outhit the Drillers 12 to 5. Marcus Tan had 3 hits for the A’s, now with six in two games, while Kevin Castillo had 2 hits, now with 4 in two games. Greg Garrity and Kevin Schellenberg also had two hits for the A’s.
With the win, their second of the tournament, the A’s will advance to a winner’s bracket quarterfinal against one of the best teams in the world, the New York Gremlins, the 2016 ASA Men’s Major National Champions, at 6PM CDT Tuesday night, August 16, 2016.
