Oxford County had five locals help the New Hamburg Mustangs win the International Softball Congress under-21 men’s championship Aug. 18 to 20 in Moline, Illinois.
Embro’s Matt Zilke and Isaiah Whetstone and Tavistock’s Tyson Zehr, Liam LaForest and Derek Hyde were all part of the Mustangs team that beat the Alvinston Jr. Indians 8-7 in the championship.
New Hamburg qualified for under-21 finals after they won the ISC Canada East qualifier June 17 to 19 in Innerkip over the Stratford Cubs.
At the ISC finals, the Mustangs opened with a 6-0 win against the Mariners then 8-0 over Richville to end their first day. They continued their success the second day with a 10-5 win versus Alvinston and then beat Richville for the second time 11-0.
In the finals, the Jr. Indians took a 7-1 lead after five-and-a-half innings, but the Mustangs came back to tie in the bottom half of the sixth inning with six runs. In the seventh inning, LaForest reached base with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball then third on a wild pitch. Hyde singled him home to win the championship.
