Venezuela won three games on Medal Round Sunday, with wins over Mexico (4-2), the USA (5-4), and Argentina, (9-2) to capture the 2017 Pan American Championship gold medal.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story called it Venezuela’s first Pan Am gold. It was not. My error mixing the records from the Pan American GAMES, held every four years and the Pan American Championship (including this 2017 tournament). We thank readers that brought it to our attention, and apologize for the error. Venezuela won a Pan Am Championship gold in 2014 in Parana.
Venezuela scored five runs in the first inning against Argentina in the gold medal game and never looked back, finishing with a 9-2 run ahead win in the 6th inning.
Argentina narrowed the lead to 5-2 in the middle innings, but that is as close as they would get, as Venezuela added 4 more runs for the final margin of victory.
Venezuela won silver at the Pan Ams two years ago in Toronto, but this year, reached the top step of the medal stand.
Argentina improved on its 2015 Bronze, earning silver, while the USA won its first medal in international competition in 14 years, capturing the bronze.
