The reigning WBSC World Champion New Zealand Black Sox captured the gold medal Saturday at the inaugural Intercontinental Softball Cup at Prague Czech Republic, with a 5-1 win over silver medalists, Japan. Nik Hayes went the distance for the win, surrendering just two hits, while striking out 8. Japan took the early lead, 1-0 in the third on a one-out single to center by K. MASAKI , who advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, S. KUROIWA S. singled up the middle, driving in MASAKI. It would be the last hit surrendered by Black Sox pitcher Nik Hayes. Japan held the 1-0 lead until the fifth.
Black Sox captain Ben Enoka got New Zealand even, with a two-out run scoring single through the left side, plating Reilly Makea. Joel Evans followed with a single to center that gave the Black Sox the lead, which they would not surrender.Looking for an insurance run in the 6th, the Black Sox got that and more, on back-to-back home runs to left field, by Campbell Enoka and Reilly Makea for the 5-1 final. Makea was 2 for 3, with 2 runs scored, while Campbell Enoka drove in 2 of the 5 runs for New Zealand.
