(Shaw-to-Schiller-to-Ochoa)
Cap tip, Matt Allen, @USASoftball
Editor’s Note:
That’s the USA’s Zac Shaw flipping to Cam Schiller and over the Erick Ochoa at first base. Which part of the play is the best? Also, yes. The play occurred in crunch time, the USA’s Super Round Win over Cuba in the 2022 Pan American Championship, in a game that got the USA into the Bronze Medal Game and qualified for the 2022 WBSC World Cup in November/December in New Zealand.
As to the historical headline reference, it’s from the poem, “Baseball’s Sad Lexicon, by Franklin Adams:
^ Adams, Franklin Pierce (1910-07-12), “Baseball’s Sad Lexicon”, in New York Evening Mail: These are the saddest of possible words:
“Tinker to Evers to Chance.”
Trio of bear cubs, and fleeter than birds,
Tinker and Evers and Chance.
Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble,
Making a Giant hit into a double —
Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:
“Tinker to Evers to Chance.”
