Vancouver Grey Sox Take 3 of 4 at Portland

The Vancouver Grey Sox travelled south to Oregon this weekend to play in a 4 game super series against CR Portland at Erv Lind Stadium.The Grey Sox prevailed in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader by a score of5 – 2. Trailing 2 -1 the Grey Sox rallied with two out in the top of the7th to score 4 runs for the victory. Derek Mayson lead the Grey Sox offenseand was 2 for 3 with a solo home run and 2 RBIs. Jeff Kawaguchi contributed2 RBIs as well, along with Brian Banner who had an RBI. Rob Gehrke andKevin Rasmussen lead the Portland attack with solo home runs. Winning pitcher was Rick Smith who had 15 ks and gave up 5 hits. Terry Luster took the loss and recorded 3 ks while surrending 5 hits.

Game 2 saw the Grey Sox jump out to an early lead and win the contest by ascore of 8 – 0 after 5 innings of play. Winning pitcher was Nick Underhill,losing pitcher was Terry Luster. Scott Newitt lead the Grey Sox attack witha 2 run home run, Gerry Kennedy and Kevin Schellenberg also homered. The teams returned to action on Sunday for games 3 and 4 of the weekendseries. The Grey Sox coninued their winning ways in the opener by downingPortland by a score of 5 – 1. Winning pitcher was Rick Smith, loser was Mike Warren. Gerry Kennedy and Kris Waverick homered for the Grey Sox.

In the finale of the weekend, Portland prevailed by a score of 3 – 2. TerryLuster got credited with the win while Nick Underhill took the loss. The Grey Sox season record now stands at 31 – 7.

Next action for the teamis July 28 – 30 when the 5th Annual Vancouver Challenge tournament takes place at South Memorial Park in Vancouver. A full list of competing teams and schedule was posted previously, and further updates leading up to the event will be provided. Information can also be found on our team website. Based upon past history this tournament always provides the local fans with good quality fastpitch action. Previous winners include in 2005 – BrokenBow NY Spirit, 2004 – Victoria Travellers Inn, 2003 – Vancouver Grey Sox and 2002 – Victoria Fineline.This year’s tournament has a good balance of teams including; Saskatoon Diamondbacks, Prince George Black Bears, Squamish Wizards, Richmond Stealers, Portland CR, So Cal Bombers and the Grey Sox which should make for a very competitive event. Action kicks off Friday evening July 28th with 2 games at 6:45 and 8:30 pm. Games commence Saturday July 29th at 9:00 amwith the last game of the day scheduled for 7:00 pm. Sunday July 30th isplayoff day with the quarter finals set for 9:00 am and the championshipfinal scheduled for 3:00 pm. Admission is $5.00 per day or $10.00 for aweekend pass.
