USA Men set to compete in Pan American Championships

Tony Peeples, Travis Price and Sonny Perkins Among Local Players for Team USA

Hermosillo, Mexico—The USA Softball Men’s National Team will being their quest to earn a spot in the 2009 ISF Men’s World Championships on Sunday, October 1 at the VII Men’s Pan American Softball Championship in Hermosillo, Mexico. Thirteen teams have confirmed their participation in the championship that runs October 1-8.

The USA, who is the defending gold medalist in this event, is the top seed in Section “A” and will open the tournament against Argentina, who is the No. 3 seed in Section “A”, at 8 p.m. on October 1.

The Red, White and Blue are looking to end the 2006 season the same way they started it back in January – with a gold medal. The U.S. took gold at the A.A.U. National Tournament in Orlando, Fla., and look to repeat as the champions of the Pan American Softball Championships.

Players representing the United States this week include eight members of the USA team that captured the 2006 AAU Men’s Fast Pitch Tournament. It was the first event won by the Men’s National Team since it captured the gold medal at the 2002 Pan American Softball Championships in Guatemala.

Members from the AAU championship squad are

Chad Boom (Barnesville, Minn.), Frank DeGroat (Ringwood, NJ.), Chris Miljavic (St. Joseph, Mo.), Blake Miller (Albany, Ga.), Sonny Perkins (St. Michaels, Ariz.), Travis Price (Santa Ana, Calif.), Landy Rodriguez (West Haverstraw, N.Y.) and Michael White (Sioux City, Iowa).

Other players selected to the roster include Paul Algar (Lexington, Ill.), Gregg Cascaes (Apple Valley, Minn.), Chad Ferguson (Battle Creek, Mich.), Lucas Goring (St. Paul, Minn.), Luis Joglar (Fairview, N.J.), Kyle Magnusson (Salt Lake City, Utah), Omar Moraga (Tucson, Ariz.), James Pecoraro (Swansea, Ill.) and Tony Peeples (San Miguel, Calif.).

The USA Softball Men’s Pan American team will be led by head coach Peter Turner (Stockton, Calif.). Turner will be assisted by Thad Brown (Modesto, Calif.) and Mitch Munthe (Modesto, Calif.).

During the round robin portion of the championship the USA will face Mexico, Argentina, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Ecuador and the British Virgin Islands.

Teams in Section “B” of the championship include Canada, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Bahamas and Cuba.

The playoffs begin on Friday, October 6 and end with the championship game on Sunday, October 8 at 1 p.m.
