ACT get off to a flyer in fastpitch title defence

By Julia Whyte, The Canberra Times

THE ACT men’s softball team sent an early warning to its competitors after starting its national fastpitch title defence with a 4-2 victory against NSW at Alton in Victoria yesterday.

Despite missing a host of players, who are travelling with the world youth team, the ACT got off to a strong start as it chases its third consecutive championship.

Laing Harrow hit a home run in his first game for the ACT since retiring five years ago. Adam Folkard impressed from the pitcher’s plate.

ACT and Australian Steelers coach Bob Harrow said it was a great way to start the tournament, but he predicted some tough matches ahead.

“It was a big win for us, beating NSW at anytime is a big win. But we were struggling for players to come here and this will do a great deal for our confidence,” he said.

“Michael Moore, who is one of the young guys we brought into the team, made some brilliant plays in the outfield and did well with the bat …”

The ACT play both the Australian under-19 team and Victoria today.
