Sill power rallies Canada over U.S.

  • SUMMERSIDE – For five innings, United States pitcher John Kelly had Team Canada in check and held a 2-0 lead. Then came the sixth. Team Canada woke up, scoring six runs thanks to tan adrenaline rush from the 2700 fans cheering them on for a much needed 6-2 win Tuesday night to cap off day five action at the ISF 2005 Junior Men’s World Softball Championship at Queen Elizabeth Park’s VIV Field in Summerside. Kelly walked Mathieu Roy of St. Gervais, Que. (0-2), then Justin Gill of Colleris, NL (2-3, run scored) singled before Bryan Abrey of Richymond, B.C. (1-2, rbi, RUN SCORED) brought Roy home. Kelly struck out slugger Jonathan Kane of Conception Bay South, NL (0-2, walk) before Ben Tee of Napnee, Ont. (1-3, run scored) hit a two-run double that scored Gill and Abrey. Nate Bauman of Elmira, Ont. (0-2) then flied out and Kelly then walked Brad Fogal of Sharron, Ont. (1-2) without pitching to him. In ISF action, a pitcher can signal four fingers to the umpire if he wants to issue the free pass.

Bobby Sill of Brookfield, N.S. (1-2) then came to the plate and made Kelly pay with a one strike, three-run blast that went over two tents with vendors in them beyond the left field coreboard to secure the win. Tyson Barkman picks up the win coming on in relief of starter Jonathan
Kane. Barkamn of Abbotsford, B.C. went three and two third innings allowing one run on one hit and fanning seven. Kane pitched three and one third innings allowing a run on three hits, walking one and striking out five. Kelly walked three and struck out six in the loss. The win moves Canada to 4-1 and tied with Japan for third spot while dropping the U.S. to 2-3 and currently out of the top four positioning to make the playoffs.
