St. Joseph Hill rallied for five runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to take down St. Peter’s 11-1 in a mercy-rule shortened contest in South Beach on Monday.

It is the first varsity win for new Hilltoppers coach Joe Wuensch.

“I thought we played pretty solid,” said the coach, who has over 15 years of experience on the men’s fast-pitch softball circuit. “Our defense made plays when we had to, our pitcher threw well and our batters put the ball in play.”

Leadoff batter Samantha Simonetti, Victoria Procopio and Katie Scarangello each went 2 for 3 in the game. Simonetti also had two stolen bases while Scarangello had the game’s only extra-base hit, scorching a double to the right-centerfield gap to kick off thegame-clinching rally.

Hill starter Maggie Sarlo fanned seven, but battled six walks, three of which came in the fourth inning when the Eagles scored their only run, a bases-loaded walk issued to Ashley Motrechuk.

Hill held an 8-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, when Taylor Winkler scored on a wild picth and Angelica Virga and Catherine Scavelli followed with RBI singles to end it.

“We’re really trying to focus on pitching and defense. That’s what wins ball games,” said Wuensch. “But I really just want the girls to play hard and leave it all on the field. That’s all I can ask.”
