First Ever Spanish Language Broadcast on Ballparkradio – Aug 17, 2010

Primera transmisión en español de un cotejo del ISC Men’s World Fastball Tournament, en Ballparkradio.

Ballparkradio is pleased to announce its first ever Spanish language broadcast of a men’s fastball game, Tuesday, August 17, 2010, at 5pm EDT from the 2010 ISC World Tournament.

The broadcast is a collaboration with “Softbol Radio“, an Argentina based website operation run by fastball player Cristian Lacout.

The broadcast will originate from Argentina, but connect listeners worldwide via the Ballparkradio website, which will host and stream the broadcast. Listeners will find find a Click to Listen button en Espanol:

We were introduced to Softbol Radio’s Cristian Lacout by Martin Jorge, the webmaster for Softball News LA (Latin America), and have been discussing the possibility for more than a year, with the planning coming to fruition in the past month or two, with successful tests of the stream from Argentina.

When Kyle Smith and I broadcast the 2008 ISF Jr. World Championships from Whitehorse, we had listeners in Argentina and other countries in Latin America, though obviously limited to extent that the listeners spoke English. We actually had one bilingual listener in Argentina who opened a chat room during the Argentina-New Zealand game, and was typing a translation of our call of the game, so the non-English speaking fans could follow along. I was struck by the great lengths that fans would go to, to follow their teams, and promised myself that I would work on a way to provide some broadcasts for non-English speaking teams and fans.

There is tremendous interest in the game of fastball in Spanish speaking countries, including Argentina, Venezuela and Mexico (three countries which sent teams to the 2008 ISF Jr. Worlds). Argentina has become a pipeline of talent to North America, with the likes of Lucas Mata, Sebastian Gervasutti, Sisko Sabate, Juan Potliccio, Matias Tessore, Bruno Motroni, and youngsters like Guido Silbert.

Venezuela has been sending a large contingent of teams to the AAU International tournament in Orlando every year, as long as I have been going, with very competitive teams like Los Socios, who won the tournament twice. Last year, the Dominican Republic National anthem was heard at the ISC World Tournament with the Dominica team in attendance. This year saw great interest in the Peligro Sports Tournament in New York, which hosted a large number of Spanish speaking players, many from the Dominican Republic.

So I am delighted that in collaboration with Cristian Lacout’s Softbol Radio, we will be able to make the “pipe dream” a reality, and open the window on the game to a wider audience.
