Hill United Chiefs of Six Nations were undeated at the Legends of Fastball Classic at Peter Hallman Ball Yard in Kitchener.
The Chiefs opened with a 8 – 1 win over the Kitchener Cubs.
With one out, top of the first and Jeff Ellesworth on first, Nick Shailes tripled to score Ellsworth. Shailes then scored on a pass ball. In the 3rd inning, Ryan Thompson singled, Coach Doug Eidt called for a sacrifice bunt from his lead off hitter Brad Ezekiel. With Thompson at 2nd Jeff Ellsworth singled to score the 2nd run. Nick Shailes walked, and Steve Mullaley homered to make it 5 runs. Back to back singles from Mark Johnson and Mark Arsenault and a error from the Cubs made it 6 – 0 after 3 innings. Brad Ezekiel walked with one out in the 4th…and Nick Shailes tripled him home..
The Cubs Nate Bauman homered off Jason Hill to lead off the 5th inning, but Hill was able to close out the 5th with no further damage.
Game 2 for Hill United was a match up against the Midland Explorers, Andy Skelton vs Adam Folkard. Midland opened the scoring in the first inning. Andy Skelton on first with a single and Dale Levy, doing what Red does homered for an early 2 run lead. That was all the offence that the Explorers could mount.
In the home half of the 1st, Brad Ezekiel walked, and Steve Mullaley doing what he does..homered to score 2 for Hill United. Jason Hill singled and was driven in on a double from Mark Johnson. 3 – 2 after one complete. Jason Sandford and Ezekiel both singled in the 2nd..and Jeff Ellsworth doubled to score them. 5 – 2 after two complete. Mark Arsenault added a homer in the 3rd off Don Scott who had come in to relieve Skelton.
In the 6th inning, Brad Ezekiel with Jason Sandford on first tripled and that was followed by a base hit RBI from Jeff Ellsworth…
Next up…Toronto Gators and another Hill win..this time 11 – 5.
Hill got 2 in the 2nd..a walk to Mark Arsenault, a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Thompson, a walk to Jason Sandford and a wild pitch, another walk, this one to Ezekiel and a 2 RBI single from Jeff Ellsworth got the Chiefs on board.
With 2 away in the 4th..a walk to Mullaley, a single to Jason Hill, both cashed in on a 3 RBI homer for Mark Johnson, and Hill United was up 5 – 0.
Toronto got on the board in the 5th, when John Kemp reached first on a dropped 3rd strike, moved to 2nd on Joel Langfords single, and a 3 RBI homer from DP Greg Garrity. Two batters latter, Mike Joseph was taken out of the park again, this time by Daryn Miller. 5 – 4 Hill still on top.
Jason Hill got the home half of the 5th started with one out, a double, and scored by Brad Ezekiel with a triple. Gator pitcher Justin Schofield was replaced by Andrew Putnam to face Ellsworth, a double and RBI, Shailes a single and RBI, scoring Ezekiel and Ellsworth. A Putnam strike out to Mullelay, and two away…Jason Hill a single, and Mark Johnson a single, scoring Shailes. Mark Arsenault RBId Jason Hill. An error by the Gators on Arsenault’s hit allowed Johnson to score…
The Gators went 3 up, 3 down in both the 6th and 7th…final 11 – 5 and Hill United on to meet Argentina …
The Chiefs got on board early with 3 runs in the first…Ellsworth on base, an error, and with 2 out, Steve Mullelay tripled and scored Ellsworth, then Jason Hill cashed Mullaley with a single, Mark Johnson walked and Mark Arsenault singled to score Hill.
Argentina sent 4 to the plate in the first, 5 to the plate in the second, 3 up 3 down in the 3rd…scored one in the 4th…Nicolas Bittor a single, advanced on Mauricio Caceres single, both advanced on a bunt by Gustavo
Godoy, and then to complete the “small ball” inning, Bittor scored on a 3rd to 1st ground ball out to Mariano Montera. That was all for Argentina’s offence. A walk and 3 out in the 5th, 3 up 3 down in the 6th and a single and 3 out in the 7th…final…3 – 1 Hill over Argentina
Also heading to the tournament final was the New Zealand Black Sox.
The opened with a 6 – 2 win over the KW Cubs
Donny Hale scored Tyron Bactorillo with a 3 base RBI in the home half of the first. With one out in the 4th…Wayne Laulu homered to make it 2 – 0. Campbell Makea walked and was sacrificed to 2nd by Aaron Neemia, and scored on Ben Enoka’s double. Fifth inning, Rhys Casley a double, then with 2 away and Casley on 3rd., Jerome Raimaki forced an error and Casley scored…Black Sox up 4 – 0 after 5
For the Cubs in the 6th and with 2 away…Grant Baechler reached first and Adam Hiller homered off Heinnie Shannon, bringing the score to 4 – 2.
Bottom of the 6th…the Black Sox got those 2 runs back, a walk to Campbell Makea, Aaron Neemia hit by pitch, both advanced by Ben Enoka’s sacrifice bunt, and scored on Tyron Bactorillo’s single..
Black Sox 5, Cubs 2..
and on to meet Midland Explorers…
Again the Black Sox open in the first, Ben Enoka a single, moved to 2nd by Bartorillo, Rhys Casely a RBI single,
and Donny Hale then scores Casely….The Explorers Grant Patterson kept the NZ squad off the scoreboard for the next 5 innings…getting 4 Ks along the way, 2 hits, and 4 innings of 3 up and 3 down.
In the visitors 7th…NZ’s Nathan Nukunuku singled to lead off, stole 2nd and 3rd. Pat Shannon entered the game to pinch hit. 2 run RBI….
Midland responded with a 2 out homer from Steve Roberts..Dan Loney flew out to right field..and the Black Sox win 4 – 1 and meet Hill United…
United up first…starter for NZ Karl Gollan gets two out, fly balls to center and left…a bit of a taste of the “long ball” to come…Nick Shailes a double followed by Steve Mullelay and Jason Hill homers…3 – 0 top of the first…Mike Joseph on the rubber for the Chiefs…3 up, 3 down….bottom of the first…same thing top of the 2nd..Then for the Black Sox, Donny Hale, bottom of the 2nd…lead off home run….a single in the 3rd for Hill United, but no scoring.
Bottom of the3rd…Tyson Byrne out on an attempted steal for the Black Sox, and Thomas Makea hits a homer..score 3 – 2 Hill United on top. Hill cannot mount any offence in the 4th or 5th. but they do leave 2 on base in the 5th..
The Black Sox score a pair in the 4th..Nathan Nakunuku and Pat Shannon combine for 2 runs on Shannon’s 2 out homer..and in the fifth…again with 2 out…this time Tyrone Bartorillo is on first with a single and Rhys Caseley homers…and New Zealand is up 6 – 3
6th inning, top, Steve Mullelay for Hill United a single and Mark Johnson a 2 RBI homer…6 – 5
Bottom of the 6th…2 out…Jerome Heretuku a lone homer…score 7 – 5 Black Sox
Top of the 7th….Jason Sandford, batting 9th gets a single, Jeff Ellsworth a single, and a 2 out 2 run double for Steve Mullaley, brings Hill to one run back of the Black Sox….and Jason Hill, a double, scoring Ellsworth and Mullaley.
Two ground balls to 2nd and a K…for reliever Adam Forkard and the Six Nation’s Hill United has a win over New Zealand…
The Black Sox met the Toronto Gators next…and came away with a 7 – 1 win…
Toronto scored first…a lead off home run, from 2nd baseman Joel Langford…but could not cross the plate again.
NZ scored 3 in the 2nd..3 in the 3rd and 1 in the 4th…Wayne Lauly scored twice, single runs from Jerome Roemaki, Aaron Noemia, Thomas Makea,Nathan Nukunuku, and Jerome Hertuku
The Black Sox were in a little tougher game against the NY Gremlins….
Batting lead off for NZ, Ben Enoka singled to lead off the game…was moved along on a single by Bartorillo, Ryse Casely hit into a double play but Enoka was at 3rd for Donny Hale’s RBI single….
Gremlins got on board in the 3rd…Mathieu Roy at first and Ben Widman at bat….home run, 2 – 1 Gremlins, then in the 4th/..Bryan Abrey singled and was advanced to 3rd on a NZ error. Nick Mullins cashed in Abrey…3 – 1 Gremlins..
Bottom of the 4th…Jerome Raemaki singled..moved to 2nd at 2 outs by TysonByrne and scored from 2nd on a Gremlin error..3 – 2 Gremlins…3 up 3 down for both teams in the 5th…
Blair Ezekiel reaches 1st on an error, and is scored on a Ryan Abrey RBI. 4 – 2 Gremlins
Bottom of the 6th…Jerome Raemaki singles…Wayne Laulu doubles scoring Raemaki followed by a single for Tyson Byrne and the score is tied…nothing for either club in the 7th..other than the 2 out walk to Mathieu Roy…
ITB (International Tie Breaker) to open the 8th….Ben Wideman on 2nd…moved to 3rd on Blair Ezekiels single…a K to John Rozich, and a ground out, 4 to 3 to Ryan Abrey…game still tied..
Patrick Shannon on 2nd…again the ITB in play…Raemaki a bunt to move Shannon to 3rd…a walk to Wayne Laulu, and walk to Tyson Byrne, bases loaded…and Aaron Neema at the plate….and a Gremlin error at 3rd…game over..
NZ wins…and up against Jarvis…and again a quick lead for NZ..
Enoka a walk, Bartorillo a sinble…Ryse Casely a 3 run homer…followed by Pat Shannons single round tripper..
2nd inning…same as the first…this time Neema a walk, Bartorillo a single, a 2 RBI triple for Casley, and then Shannon again a homer, this time cashing in Casley as well.
Jarvis gets on board with a run by Brandon Horn…on Dan Martin’s RBI.
The teams swap runs in the 3rd…Ryan Wolfe for Jarvis and Nakunuku for NZ…
For Jarvis in the 4th….Boland scores Boland….
and in the 6th…Casley homers again, his second of the game, and with the triple he totals 6 RBIS against Jarvis.

The Chiefs got a big jump on NZ, scoring 5 in the first inning off 4 hits, …homers from lead off hitter Brad Ezekiel, and Mark Arsenault, a double from Nick Shailes, a single from Steve Mullaley, chasing Heinie Shannon with 2 outs in the first…The Black Sox got 4 hits themselves in the 2nd..but could only cash in one…Wayne Laulu on Jerome Raemaki’s single..They picked up a pair in the 3rd…Ryse Casely and Pat Shannon scored…on Laulu’s and Nakunuku’s RBIs..
In the 4th…down 7 – 3…the BlackSox picked up two more..again on the long ball…a Rhys Casely’s 2 run dinger…also scored Bartorillo. 7 – 5…
Nothing from Hill United in the 3rd 4th or 5th…

Owen Sound Selects were defeated by the Wiarton Red Devils 8 – 3 in the 4 team junior division championship game..The Red Devils Travis Jones picked up the win…3 runs on 7 hits for Selects
Ty Sebastian got the save for the Wiarton club..and contributed 2 runs; a single and a triple
For Owen Sound Selects, Caleb Keesig allowed the 8 runs on 10 Wiarton hits…The Selects left 11 baserunners stranded.
Earlier in pool play…the Selects defeated the Red Devils 6 – 5
Owen Sound had opened the tournament with a 8 – 0 win over New Dundee/Stratford Cubs; the Cubs also lost to Wiarton 3 – 2
Wiarton opened with an 11 – 2 victory over Walkerton Wild. Owen Sound was 5 – 3 over Walketon
The Sunday semi-final game scores were Owen Sound 2 – 0 over Walkerton
and Wiarton 4 – 1 over NewDundee/Stratford.

Keady Jets hosted the OASA Junior Elimination tournament at Duncan McLelland park.
The Owen Sound Selects won for the 4th consecutive year defeating Oshawa BBs 4 – 2 in the final, on a 3 run homerun from Cody Skelton in the 7th. Michale Legace-Roote got the win.
Oshawa reached the final with a win over the Walkerton Wild 8 – 5.
Owen Sounds tournament record in the double elimination included a 13 – 0 win over Mildmay, 7 – 0 over Wiarton Red Devils, and 9 – 1 over Walkerton Wild..
Oshawa BBs opened with Tavistock and won 6 – 1, then a loss to Walkerton 4 – 1, back with a win over Syndenham 6 – 4, and 5 – 3 over Wiarton…
Wiarton had eliminated New Dundee/Stratford 3 – 2. The Red Devils defeated Sydenham 7 – 6 in 10 innings and St Mary’s 9 – 2

There were some great young ball players in Owen Sound this weekend and they were led by some very good coaches. I spent Saturday at the park..enjoyed a lot of great ball games….In the games that I watched the players concentrated on the game, didn’t lose focus, and good play or bad, got back into the game quickly. Good leadership on many of these teams. Looking forward to seeing more of that in New Dundee this weekend at the U18 (Midget) Elims..

NEW DUNDEE OASA MIDGET (U18) ELIMINATIONS
This weekend New Dundee will host the OASA Under 18 (Midget) eliminations. Brad Thomson has sent me the attached schedule. This is a 14 teamer…starts Friday evening at 5 pm…with 2 games..the Ontario Rural Softball Ass’n champs vs Domville. and Pickering vs Caledonia. At 7, Highgate vs K-W, and Milverton vs Cobourg, and at 9 Saugeen vs Tavistock, and Napanee vs Fullerton…Owen Sound and New Hamburg have 1st round byes and start Saturday morning at 9.
Anyone who enjoys good fastpitch should find a good game or two to watch this weekend at New Dundee

Dave Bailey has sent along the lineup for the Cephas Roth tournament the weekend after the Midget elims..
This is big time fastpitch, with some great local clubs, Elmira, Shakespeare, Kitchener Outlaws and the Kitchener Cubs, plus some of the great teams that we saw at the Legends, Jarvis, NY Gremlins, Hill United, Midland, Toronto, Port Elgin, (some with additions from the NZ Legends roster), along with the Wiarton Nationals and the strong Scarborogh Force team.
