Pioneer Day Tournament Trivia, courtesy of Ken Hackmeister:
Pioneer Days was first held in 1974 (32-teams) to help our local organization prepare to host the 1975 ASA Women’s Major national tournament. Prior to 1974, the tournament was exclusively local teams and was half fastpitch, half slowpitch (ugh!) and called Days of ’47 which is the Utah designation for when Pioneers first settled Salt Lake valley.
Editor’s note: Ken Hackmeister and Peter Meredith ! Ken was behind the original Pioneer Days tournaments, among the best I ever attended. It was 1992 and computers were just coming into everyday use. The Larry Miller Complex was just the Cottonwood Complex then, but it hosted the best teams of the day, including Peter Meredith’s Larry Miller Toyota. After the games, the players and fans would line up under the bleachers and wait for the posting of the stats that were pulled from the buzzing dot matrix printers on perforated paper. (young players, ask your folks about those ;-)) Top teams, top facilities, and plenty of information on the games and players. Trademark Ken Hackmeister. I’m very much looking to the the return of this tournament.
Editor’s Note II: Did July 12-14 just become the biggest tournament weekend of the summer?

There is a fourth tournament July 12-14. The Ontario Amateur Softball is hosting the provincial Masters A and B championships in Cambridge Ont. Toronto Gators will be back to defend their championship and will be using this tournament as other teams will for the World Masters in Italy in August.
