Peligro 2011

California A’s are 2011 Peligro Cup champions

The California A’s captured the 2011 Peligro Cup, and $10,000 prize money, with a 7-0 win over runner-up Dominicana, in a game that ended at 2:00 a.m. Monday at Crotona Park in the Bronx, New York, just a couple of miles up the road from Yankee Stadium.

The California A’s rebounded from their opening night loss to the New Zealand Black Sox, 2-0 in a semi-final win, powered by a 2 run homer by Paul Rosebush, then ran away with the finale to clinch the Cup. The A’s combined good offense, with dominant pitching.

For most of Sunday, it looked like the tournament’s final day of playoff games would be rained out. But tournament organizers scrambled to repair the wet fields and even find another field to complete the 2011 tournament.

Playoff games that were set to begin at 10:00 a.m. EDT finally began just before 5:00 p.m., and ran into the wee hours of Monday morning. The championship game wound down with New York’s finest ready to close things down due to the 2am curfew, after the game was moved from Randall’s Island to a park in the Bronx with lights.

Arrival
We arrived in Fort Lee, NJ last night. We managed to catch an earlier flight and got in around 5pm. The 15 minute drive from LaGuardia to the hotel took almost 2 hours. If you’ve never experienced rush hour traffic, it isn’t much fun. I have a whole new appreciation for the people who do that everyday.

We met with Jose, Doug and Eddie from New Zealand, and a good number of umpires. I cannot adequately describe what that was like. Then Paul Walford sat down. Then Chubb Tangarroa. I was surrounded. It was pretty neat, listening to these guys reminisce.

Today we will be visiting the fields and getting paperwork in order. The manager’s meeting is scheduled for tomorrow (Friday) at 11am at the Holiday Inn in Fort Lee, NJ. Games start tomorrow night at 6:15pm at Crotona Park (1682 Boston Road, Bronx) with Chicago/New York playing Excellent NY and at 8:15 the New Zealand team takes on the California A’s.
