The Gahan House Bud Light Fawcetts have some unfinished business.
A year ago, the Fawcetts went on an unprecedented run by a P.E.I.-based team at the Canadian senior men’s fastpitch championship, coming away with a silver medal at the Central fields. This season, the goal is to take that final step.
“That’s what we figured,’’ said Fawcetts infielder Mark Arsenault. “We came so close last year and most of the guys wanted to take another crack at it. We’ve lost a couple guys but we’ve added some junior kids that will give us some versatility in our lineup, so we should be able to make another run.
“And we also thought it was important to maintain the continuity. It was important for us after the season that we had to not just walk away and not have anyone represent P.E.I. at nationals.’’
The biggest loss from the core group is pitcher-outfielder Mike Bishop, who has retired. The Fawcetts have shuffled their list of import players.
Out are infielder Kevin Schellenberg and catcher Kelly Wenstrom and in are infielder Rowan Lam and outfielder Mark Johnson from Glencoe, Ont., both members of last year’s Canadian champion Kitchener Rivershark Twins, and right-handed pitcher Ward Gosse from Torbay, N.L. Johnson and Alberton native Jeff Ellsworth were named co-MVPs at the Amateur Athletic Union International tournament in Kissimmee, Fla., in January, when both suited up for the Chicago/New York entry. The Fawcetts are still looking for a replacement for Wenstrom at catcher for nationals. Saskatchewan native Trevor Ethier and Alberton’s Mitch Hardy round out the pitching staff. Click here for the complete story and photo.
