Sunday update:

The # 1 ranked Jarvis Travelers continued their winning ways at the Tavistock Cephas Roth Memorial Tournament, topping the Owen Sound Selects in the championship game, 2-0, after getting past the #5 ranked Midland Explorers in the semi-finals, 7-3.

If you missed either of these last two games, but want to listen to them, you’ll find them at the archives section of Ballpark Radio. (click link), free of charge.

The top ranked teams in the world will return to play in two weeks, at Bill Hillhouse’s Erie Pennsylvania tournament, July 30-31, 2011. Selected games from that tournament will be broadcast live on Ballpark Radio both Saturday and Sunday, with Kyle Smith once again taking his traveling show on the road.

Kyle started the year broadcasting the AAU International Tournament in January, was in Kitchener for the Legends Tournament last month, Tavistock this weekend, and then on to Erie. No letting up come August, as Kyle will headline 20+ ISC TV video broadcasts from Moline, Illinois all week long, August 14-21, 2011.

Thursday night

It sure looks like a great weekend ahead of us at the Tavistock Ball Parks. A nice crowd gathered for opening night at Queen’s Park in Tavistock for the opening games of the Cephas Roth Memorial Fastpitch tournament.

Clear blue skies, green outfield, beautiful refurbished ball park, in one of the nicest towns in south western Ontario, parked right on the edge of Waterloo, Oxford and Perth counties, just south of hwy 7 between Kitchener and Stratford.

The KW Cubs and Shakespeare Falcons opened this years tournament with a great ball game. Scott Wagar of the Cubs and Fred Follings went the distance, with Folling of the Falcons picking up the 1 – 0 win over South Perth rival KW Cubs.

The Cubs loaded the bases in the first inning, Bob Gillow, Grant Baechler, and Allan Phibbs on base with one out….and Follings pitched himself out of trouble with 2 K’s, Travis Hofstetter and Scott Wagar….

Follings alowed two hits to the Cubs in the first and shut them down with 6 hitless innings.

Jamie Boyd, batting at a 350 pace in South Perth League play led off the 2nd inning for Shakespeare with a triple. Falcon catcher hit to short with a force to first allowing Boyd to score.

Jodie Schnarr had a great catch in left for the Falcons

Game 2, brought two leading clubs from two local leagues to the park…the Sweaburg Crush from the TriCounty League, operating south of Tavistock up against the Elmira Expos, of the South Perth League, operating north of Tavistock…

The Expos brought power to the plate tonight and employed thier shut down defence to put one in the win column.

Expo Kevin Gutscher had a 2 RBI triple in the 3rd to score Tim Freeman and Casey Halstead. Freeman was walked, Halstead singled, Mark Gutscher sacrificed them to 2nd and 3rd, and Kevin Gutscher brought them home

in the 5th…for the Expos, Freeman walked again, Mark Gutscher walked, and this time the triple that produced the two runs was short stop Josh Brohman, Josh was scored by Trevor Beatson on a double, and then Beatson scored on a Dan Martin triple…Casey Halstead made it 7 with a solo homer in the 6th….

The Crush run was scored by Rob Bambury, who singled and was scored on a double by Steve Johnson…
